Can you judge people from how they are on the internet? |

Say, if someone behaves a certain way on an online forum, or shows a certain personality while chatting. Do you think it reflects how he is in the real world, or do you think people can be totally the opposite?

I think you will find a majority of people will say that they are the same person online as they are in real life but it's total bullsh*t. You can be anyone you wan't to be online, all you need to do is WIKI something and you can know enough about it to fool most people into believing your an expert at it.
I guarantee that every single person on this forum has lied about one or more aspects of their lives, be a little white lie or something major, everyone has done it, myself included. The mask of the internet is an easy one to hide behind and pretend you are someone else.
For those members who have actually met each other in person, usually haven't hidden much, because they actively sought out the meeting, means that they are comfortable enough with their persona online and that they believe it reflects their true personality.
The majority of regular active members will be more true to themselves online. The reason being that the less you post, the less people know about you, the less questions they are going to ask as to the authenticity of your story.
Thats what i think.
I just WIKI'd human behaviour.
Or did I?

I've been told several times that I'm just as annoying and anti-social in real life as I am on the Internet

it depends on the situation, i think.. but most of the time, i think people act different in forums/chat.. for some reason, people want to act cool, smart, when they are online.. and what trigodor said, you can be anybody you want to be in the "cyber world" and it's actually not surprising.. people lie to other people's faces all the time, even face to face.. why should it be hard for them to do it online?? |

@QVGA, I find your posts somewhat "arrogant" and "on the face" kind of ones. I stand by my story whatever you say is what your posts scream. (most of the time you're correct though.) Are you like this in real life?
Did not mean to offend you, just what I felt.
As for me, i'm much more outspoken in my online guise.

Its a virtual world so people can say whatever they feel like knowing that they cannot be touched or found out. Also, you cannot know somebodys emotions without looking at their face i.e. if I am angry, I will look angry. A better example would be if I were criticised today online I would ignore it but if in a bad mood, I would go nuts especially knowing that I could not be harmed physically. |

In my experience, people's online persona is roughly similar to how they are in real life. They're just braver, that's all
But I do realise that there are plenty of nutters out there who adopt completely different personalities for one reason or another.

I think people are always different IRL. I don't know why, I guess it's the fact that it's... the internet. |

Well I, never lie about anything on the internet. Im just and average 20 year old girl looking to find love online. Hit me up: hotchick666@hotmail.co.uk. I have just won the lottery so im looking to share my winnings!
Was that a bit OTT? To be honest I think people will act in a similar way online as they do in real life. Despite the first few lines of this message, I tend to act more maturely online.
