which? article, BBC article
Some keyboards carry more harmful bacteria than a toilet seat, Which? Computing reveals today.
Researchers tested keyboards from a typical London office and found bacteria that could put their user at high risk of becoming ill.
The germs found could cause food poisoning symptoms such as diarrhoea and other stomach upsets
I often turn my keyboard upside down and bash it... its scary seeing all the dead skin and other stuff that comes out! yeuch!

I have to admit all these 'x is dirtier than a toilet seat' comparisons a little tedious now, so far pretty much everything's been compared cleanliness wise to a toilet seat, and for some reason they're all dirtier! I'm thinking now that toilet seats are actually quite clean, and just used for scaremongering reasons.
Though I do concede the amount of crap that falls out of your keyboard when you hold it upside down and shake it is a bit surprising, though I'm sure there's no deadly bugs in there! I recently bought one of those super-blowers for cleaning dust and crap out of camera lenses, and it's also ideal for blowing out all that debris from your keyboard, it's also surprisingly satisfying seeing all that stuff coming out of your keyboard.... or am I just wierd?

not weird at all. I'm a tidy freak myself and I even empty, sort and restack the kitchen cupboards after wife just throws everything in there after a big shop. thats quite satisfying too!

I read somewhere that a good way of cleaning a keyboard is to put it through a dishwasher. As most keyboards use a membrane they should be ok. Obviously dont try it with a wireless keyboard or the keyboard on your laptop while is is still attached.

Maybe these people sh*t on their keyboards? Toilet seat is quite clean unless you sh*t on top of it and not through the hole. The flush and door handle have more bacteria. Just hoover your keyboard once in a while and wash your hands after you come out of the toilet to prevent death by keyboard. |

In fact I might start eating my tea off the toilet seat, it seems to be quite clean judging by all the comparisons!
Thing is though, we all need a bit of dirt in our lives to keep up our natural defences against bugs and bacteria, if our houses are too clean it leaves us vulnerable to illness IMHO.
@ tranced - omg, that's worse than my keyboard's ever been!
