it totally depends on the airlines own policy.

British Airways and Qantas both allow you to put the phone into flight mode before take off and then use it during the flight up to when the plane starts descending (in the case of Qantas) or (someway down the descent in the case of BA)

well i had the phone in flight mode when i was with ryan air, listening to music and flicking through the party pics we took. I wasn't told anything, although i cant actually say if anyone saw me using it. I guess you might as well ask the stewards at some point during the flight.

Never had any problems using it - a flight attendant once told me using mobile phones was prohibited- I explained I had it in plane mode and everything was fine.
Yea- it's awesome to listen to music on your cellphone in the plane. Beats their lousy cracky headphones anyday.

emirates, singapore airlines, cathay pacific, virgin airlines, egypt air, saudi arabian airlines, royal jordanian airlines, alitalia, gulf air, kuwait airways & air france.
i have taken long haul flights on all these airlines & used various phones in offline/flight mode while on board & never had a problem.
i would like to add that flight crew is always easy on 1st class passengers. [addsig]

On Virgin Australia they make you turn off all electronics gadgets, radio based or not, until the plane is in the air, they say nothing about mobiles. Then you can turn them on once the aircraft is at cruising altitude. They never said not to turn the mobile back on - they just said we could turn our electronics back on. They made no differentiation between "electronic" and "mobile phone".

I put mine in flight mode anyway.

as far as i know all planes ask for you to turn off all electronics for take off and landing once at cruising altitude you can use electronic gadgets, i'm gonna see with olympic airways this year see if they have a problem with the phone in flightmode.

Was hoping to watch a movie, but i think i may just have to keep my Mp3 player handy just in case.
