I'm thinking about getting a P1 mainly for business reason. I want to be able to keep records like inventory, the money coming in and out, track daily sales record, and write notes on the fly.

Can P1 for Excel? What other application should I look for that can do the above?

P1 has pre-installed QuickOffice application for Word, Excel, dan PowerPoint. Also it has pdf+ for pdf reader.
For your purpose I suggest you to install Documents To Go (this is also office application) and Handy Tools (for monitoring your money).

Are there any phones (for business) that is better than this? The salesman I've talked to this morning said what I really need is a PDA phone and not a smartphone. The one he showed me (O2) cost twice as much!

How is the performance in Excel? Is there a limit on how many sheets I could do? Is it slow?

What is the Nokia/Samsung/Motorola equivalent (or better) for this?

Smartphones and PDAs are used interchangeably. The P1i is a strong PDA phone. However, Docs to Go is a much better application than the built-in Quick Office. It will cost you around US$50.

Nonetheless, the P1i is already good out of the box. I'd get it if I were you.

I use my P1 for word documents all the time, almost everyday. As well as email and internet browsing, it does all of these really well.

I've found that powerpoint (simple files) work ok as well, nothing to shout about though. And the PDF while drawing may be a bit slow again tends to be alright, and if you convert them with mobireader / mobipocket creator they work very well.

Excel files on the other hand is a slightly different matter. WHile not slow (as powerpoint of PDF is) it is complicated to use the excel sheets. It is a mix of stylus and keyboard, also given that many files tends to be quite big the small screen of the P1 is not ideal. I mean even on the PC i sometimes have trouble editing big excel files.

On the other hand if you want some basic lists e.g. Expenditure: Café - £7, Newspaper - £1.20, Gym - £5 these are easy to do.
Just be concious of the fact you are working with a device whose screen is smaller than the PC and so will not display as big an area as you need to edit the file without scrolling:

Documents to go (excel) displays columns A-C for rows 1-8 in windowed mode, in full screen it displays A-C and rows 1-16.

In landscape you have columns A-D and rows 1-9, and landscape full you have A-D rows 1-12. To access any other rows and columns you'll need to scroll.

In quickoffice (default veiwer on the phone, although probably not as advanced) you have columns A-D and rows 1-12 in normal portrait mode.
In full screen you get A-D and rows 1-19.

In landscape you get A-F and rows 1-14.

So as you can see there are some limitations, and as long as you are not expecting large graphs and complex formulas it should suffice as a money management program.

However as someone already mentioned Handy Expense is a money management program, I used it on my trip to Dublin, it worked very well and it exports the final file as an excel sheet for you to save into your accounts.

However, entries are a little time consuming and also if you are like me and you are out spending money here and there but dont update for a while you'll forget what you spent lol. But on the whole it was a very good program.

Hope that helps

if you really want to use the excel format and dont mind spending an hour or so learning something new, i ould definately reccomend a windows mobile device

there are a vast array of them, but i would reccomend one with a slide-out keyboard (i personally use the HTC TyTN II). all mobile providers in the UK have a branded version of the tytn ii (its basically the one with the touchscreen and slde out/tilt keyboard), and it is a massive step better than symbian uiq (on the p1)
Mobile working solution:
Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue 6920G + DVB-T ExpressCard + Merlin XU870 + 3 5GB/mo Mobile Broadband
HTC TyTN II + T-Mo Flext 25 W'n'W
Nokia 5300 + T-Mo Everyone PAYG

@andrew

No doubt the tytn is a great device, the big problem tho is the size, not everyone will want to carry it around with them everywhere they go.

Oh and just wondering how does the screen size fair. I believe it is bigger than the P1's but can you effectively work on a excel sheet with ease on such a device?

The Tytn II has a bigger screen, but the resolution is the same (QVGA).

I just checked on mine, and by default it shows A-C and 1-12 (or A-D and 1-7 in landscape), so similar - but you can zoom out and see a lot more than that, with it still being reasonably readable, thanks to the larger screen. This is genuine Microsoft Office Mobile, so in theory it should be as compatible with "real" Excel as they get, although to be fair it's been a while since I used Documents-to-Go so I can't really compare them.

I'm a big fan of the Tytn II, it's about as good as serious smartphones get right now. Yes it's a little bigger and certainly heavier than the P1, but it also packs a lot more in.

well i can attest to Documents to go being very good compatibility wise, all files i've created and edited have never had a problem with word or excel.

The one small problem with word which i found however was when you create a bullet point list and then want to enter a sub-point you indent the bullet point in word and effectively you get two bullet points one being indented.

On documents to go it shows the bullet points all in one list. So that is a minor issue. But other than that i have never had a file that has been corrupted or that has not been readable.

Just to illustrate things, here's a couple of screenshots from Office Mobile on the Tytn II - the first I've zoomed right out (50%) to show as much as possible, you can see it's just starting to become unreadable. The second is 75% and quite useable.

The second screenie is pretty much what you get with the default quickoffice excel on the P1.

I like the idea of zooming out would come in handy.

off topic, but can you actually change the Windows Mobile themes or is it just the colour schemes that change?

with windows mobile professional (i.e. touchscreen) you can only change colour schemes

on the other hand, with standard (i.e. non-touchscreen) you can have homescreen themes as well as colour schemes

if you don't like the size of the tytn ii, you can sacrafice the touch screen and screen size and get the HTC S730 (see htc.com, o2 currently have a branded version of it) which also has a slide out keyboard. this has windows mobile standard, so you can change the homescreen themes

there is a huge mass of software available to customise windows mobile, masses more than uiq

in addition, just to clarify, office 6.1 (which is on both the phones i reccomend) preserves all of the formatting of word and excel documents, even if it doesn't support editing them, which is generally better than the third-party alternatives
