Depends what your after. If its a compact your after then the Panasonic is a great buy. Also Sony W80 recently was given 5 stars for pictures quality which is also a compact. If your serious and spending more go for the Nikon D40 or D80. Also for compacts Fuji are very good also they are the best for low light photography. DONT BUY PENTAX OR KODAK very unreliable cameras. |

I'd suggest the Canon PowerShot A720is, lots of manual settings like aperture/shutter priority (Ideal for night shots though a tripod or 'Gorillapod' is recommended), and image stabilisation. Takes excellent pics too, got mine for £149 from Jessops

dont really want the D40...too technical for other members of the family.
price is around £200
was thinking of TZ5 as it has 10X optical zoom and records video at 720p 30fps.

About 5 months or so I was in the market for a DSLR and had a choice between the Canon eos 400D and the nikon D80. After much deliberations, research and physically testing different cameras I went for the monster Nikon D200.
What I'm saying is you won't go wrong with with a Nikon, I agree with leeboy13 on those options.
And this is coming from a former canon 350D user.

as i have said, the d40 style cameras are fine with me but not when its out of my hands, it would be nice for a spot and shot camera and compact.
is there any very similar ones to the TZ5?

ayejatt, being the very happy of a TZ3, I can only imagine the TZ5 being an improvement over mine. It's deffo a good buy! Just lack of manual controls is a little annoying but perfect photos every time.
And here's a little know fact, it actually does 15x optical when in 3mpx mode by only using the centre of the sensor. So, with digital zoom as well, it has a max zoom of 60x... that takes some beating in a compact.

They can be a little noisy at times, above ISO400 you can notice the graininess, but the flash is powerful enough to sort it, or if you'll be doing distant scenery, there are longer exposure options.

here is some pictures off my tz3, they are pretty nice. i cant stand it in low night though, way to noisey for my liking. zoom is good mind.
i still use my fuji f30 more.
Tbh though id still pick a tz3 (ur case 5) over anything else in a compact. as i had a few sony t series cameras before the tz3 and they where just rubbish.
Edit: link here

Ayejatt mate, here's some of my stuff, TZ3, natch: (The ones with faded colour are because of the fog, tried to compensate with a different WB but ultimately the fog did ruin them.)
