China has already overtaken the US as the world's "biggest polluter", a report to be published next month says.
The research suggests the country's greenhouse gas emissions have been underestimated, and probably passed those of the US in 2006-2007.
The University of California team will report their work in the Journal of Environment Economics and Management.
They warn that unchecked future growth will dwarf any emissions cuts made by rich nations under the Kyoto Protocol.
The team admit there is some uncertainty over the date when China may have become the biggest emitter of CO2, as their analysis is based on 2004 data.
Until now it has been generally believed that the US remains "Polluter Number One".

Global warning is tosh. The earth has been changing for centuries we are just perhaps speeding it all up a bit. All i know is its just another excuse for polititians to tax up more but at the end of the day whatever we do China will double so whats the point. I aint worrying about it sorry. Oh and China blames the west for what THEY are doing. Yes we have been killing the climate for longer but China is more than making up for it now and is far far worse and more than what we are doing. HOW THE HELL IS IT OUR FAULT. The West gets the blame for everything. Tut. |

This is old news and hardly surprising really because many US manufacturers such as Wal-mart have outsourced so much of thier product from China. The Chinese are building infrastructure such as power stations at lightning speed to take advantage of this economic shift in fortune and the environment is taking a pounding...
Outsourcing from China appears to be the easy way for most Western industrialised countries to meet thier Kyoto protocol obligations. China has yet to sign up, Russia has a very favourable deal. NZ however, has been shafted (as usual) having to return to 1990 CO2 levels when less computers and Mobile phone chargers where in existance, much less population, and before all our foresty owners started deforestation to convert land to profitable dairy farming. Basically, we're screwed. Perhaps we could de-ratify? It's all just a big tax scam anyway...
