Well, if it was made in 2003 then I think you're right going for 1 Gig. Besides, even if it can take 2 Gig, it wouldn't make much difference performance wise.
Kingston memory is my favourite brand

Yeah, it'll definitely make a difference. XP rarely uses more than 1Gb unless you multi-task lots of huge programs or files so adding 512 should be enough

Well am planning for ubuntu and or opensuse. It is not my main PC just would be nice to have a nippy fella. His 6th birthday soon
I would like to change the celeron to a pentium M and a new Harddrive (2.5" I believe.). Would replace it but it has a brilliant keyboard. Also would like a new battery but I hate the obscurity of this machine. Not like saying yeah it's a dell m1330 it is unheard off around the tineternet. But oh well. |

Yeah, you can't upgrade processors in laptops generally. Not unless you're very good with a micro soldering iron and the motherboard + Bios can take it.
Linux will run fine with 768Mb, as paul quite rightly said. It won't be blisteringly fast, but it'll be more than usable

Hi Thomas,
You need to be careful with laptop processors, usually with those machines you get a removable chip however it depends on how many pins you have.
If it's from a intel celeron, then the only workable upgrade is Pentium 4HT 3.3ghz + to feel speed increases. Make sure you have sufficient cooling (2 fans) as Pentium 4 generates quite a bit of heat.
Also, your motherboard needs to be compatible with the bios. And 2.5 hdd has two different types, SATA, ATA.
Hope that helps,
Derek
