Changing your computer's sound output device |

My bf borrowed my comp and played music off it with speakers he plugged in.
Now I can't change the volume and it plays no sound even though the volume is at full. Below the pop-up volume symbol (when you hit the inc/dec v buttons) is a "no" symbol as in a circle with a line through it.
I tried plugging in headphones, and the sound worked fine, but when I unplegged them it went back to the same state.
I tried changing my preferences here:
system preferences>sound>output
All that's in the box is, "headphones, built in output" or if I unplug them it says, "digital out, built in output"
How do I get my sound settings back to normal? |

Is this a Windows Vista / XP laptop? Or a macbook?
If it's vista or xp, do you have a separate control control (not the windows one) for the sound device? This will be either in the start menu somewhere or there could be an icon for it in the system tray.
There might be be an option somewhere within this other control panel to allow you to select "wave output" instead of "digital output", which is what appears to be the problem.
Otherwise, let me know what computer / operating system you're using and I'll have a hunt through the standard control panels for you
