Some IMAP feature questions —

a) In which SE mobile phone models does the built-in IMAP client include folder subscriptions? That means, aside from just accessing INBOX, how about sub-folders, Sent folder, and the like?

b) Similar question to (a), how about Push-IMAP support in the built-in IMAP client?

c) I believe they started to include the SMTP Auth (authenticated SMTP) feature at some point, I'm not sure when/where.

I use imaps (i.e. SSL connection mode) to access my server from the phone; need smtp_auth, and would really like to start using IMAP folder subscriptions. Can I do that in the K-series models, and exactly which ones? (My older K-series handsets, thru K750i, can't do it Thanks! Larry.

I recieve Email to my V640i (K630i) and it works fine. There is an option in the menu for Push Email but it is blanked out and the info says not supported by the server, so I guess VodafoneNZ have disabled it. Check with you local network provider for Push Email compatibility. You can set the check interval to Off/5/30/60 mins/2/4/12/24 hrs.

Drafts, Outbox, Saved and Sent folders are listed, but not subfolders - I don't know, you can setup multiple Accounts so perhaps an Account for each subfolder you want to check would work? I'm a bit of an Email novice so if you find out, post info here!

SMTP authentication is included and can be set to Enabled, Disabled, or Same as IMAP4 (which seems to work okay for me ?!?)

V640i is HSDPA compatible and a check out this speed test:

Hope this helps!

Thank you, karkitter.
It's good to know that we have authenticated smtp, I think that's critical these days, since not many of us will have wide-open SMTP relays any longer.

About the IMAP folder subscriptions, for example if you create a folder called
"memo", or "meetings", in your mail account ... either as a sub-folder of INBOX
or as a top-level folder, then we should be able to both (a) subscribe to it (i.e.
browse/read/reply its messages); and (b) move messages to/from that folder,
on the IMAP server ... using the SE handset's built-in email client. Perhaps
that's a feature that is only in the high-end / smartphone models!

There are some good Java IMAP clients out there, but I think they all require
paid subscriptions (aside from the gmail app). gmail can be used to channel
mail with your other internet mail services, but that requires some set-up. Larry

I just got a new K550i, and the SMTP Auth is fully implemented (with the options of TLS and SSL, and port numbers for incoming and outgoing, I need those), hooray!!

IMAP folder subscriptions are not implemented. I understand that would be a very major UI upgrade, for the email client.

Not very familiar with the "Copy Outgoing" email message feature, but I really believe it's too cumbersome (I just want to do an IMAP copy to the Sent folder on the server; not a local message copy, and not a cc or bcc).

The Push Email feature is there, and it seems to work! Larry.

Congratulations on your new phone!

I've noticed with the V640i that you can save the emails to the the memory card which is a nice touch but with 32MB built in I save them to the phone.

So you have Push Email eh? What country are you from and what network do you use?

Push email ... my internet provider (via GPRS) is T-Mobile USA.

So far I was using my own private IMAP server (which is dovecot 1.0.13);
i have another imaps service that I'm going to check, will see if it does the same.
And I haven't examined the server-side logs to see whether it says anything of
note (it probably wouldn't, anyhow). Larry
