Hi all,

I would be intrested to hear what you guys think.

Basicly I have a 40 year old cousin who I am close with. Im kind of worrid about his health.

He has been smokeing for about 23 years and their have been no problems, infact most of my uncles who are in there 70's smoke, however their are a few things that worry me.

He is 6'3 and last year he went to the doctors and all was fine, a healthy weight for his size, about 105-115 kg (can't remember which one). The thing is, he is loosing a lot of weight, in a year he has gone down to 83kg. He has Bronchitus, typical for a smoker and getting an x-ray next week. Touch wood it will all be ok. From what he tells me, he eats healthy, but with his job he oftern fogets to eat, is that a reason? He also has a family to support, who are also quite worrid.

Can any one give an idea to why he is loosing so much weight?

Well in the old days people used to say smoking makes you loose weight, I don't know how true this is, I believe it to be a old wives tale.

Missing meals will make you loose allot of weight and can do fast, I know a few guys who got divorced, within 3 months they had lost allot of weight (mainly because they were working harder/longer and skipping meals.

Loosing weight is a generally a good thing as long as he doesnt become under weight, one concern is not eating meals can have health problems.

Stress can also make people loose weight. The best thing to do would be to see a doctor about it though, much better then asking on a forum of non health professionals.

Totally untrue mate.Smoking slows down the matablisim (sp?) therefore slowing digestion down and storing more fatty tissue

Doing the above will make you lose weight rapidly but after a short time the weight loss will stop as the stomach starts to swell and the stomach expands. Once the fatty tissue has nearly gone. The body will start to eat away at the muscle

I would certainly consult a doctor about it. You might find its something to do with the digestive system or some form of Cancer. Especially if the weight loss is quite rapid.

Ok well firstly lets take a look at what you describe as healthy 6'3 105Kg that gives him a BMI of roughly 29 in other words he was bodering on obesity. According to your new weight figures with a weight of 83 and a BMI of 22 that makes him fall into the normal weight category in other words his current weight is fine for his height.

But if you are worried that there might be an underlying reason for his weight loss depending how rapid (believe me missing meals can make you drop like mad) then I suggest you check the following: Have a look at his neck and close to his ears and check for any lymph-nodes on either side. If not I know its rude to ask but check his tongue as well ideally you know what a healthy tongue looks like but if you see any form of thrush at the top or bottom I would suggest he goes for a blood test with immediate effect.

I know its never a nice subject to touch on but if he has suffered from Bronchitis and sudden weight loss then it could be an early sign of HIV, and if he develops any symptoms (like fever, chills, chest pain), then you should consult your doctor immediately.

I hope all is well and will keep a prayer open for the guy.

Thanks a lot for the info mate. Bordering obesity? Thats odd because he was never big, however his upper body was very tonned before, so that might be why.

He does tell me he skips a lot of meals because he is always busy. When he does eat, its always salads. He has an X ray next week, hopefuly it won't reveal any thing bad, but he really has to stop smokeing. He never has chills and is never really ill which hopefuly means he has not got any thing that bad.

Well I do wish him all the best glad to hear he has an x-ray booked, but to try and persuade him to still get that above test even if he thinks its not worth it. The hospitals dont do the test unless requested.
