Blu-ray will be history, says Microsoft |

Blu-ray may have won, but Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis reckons "shiny discs" will look as rubbish as boring old vinyl records and those hilarious Video Cassette Recorders before long. Lewis said, "Going forwards, digital downloads is really where it's at," . "More and more people's ongoing and ever-increasing downloading of music and movies is becoming the de facto. I think that's going to happen in very short order; people want to consume that way," he continued.
"Before very long we will look back wistfully at shiny discs as something that was somewhat a historic phenomenon in a way that we kind of think about vinyl or VCRs today." According to Lewis, the shift away from using discs to store media and towards using them as coasters will happen "sooner than any of us think". "That's the future direction, and I think that's going to be the case in the next 12-18 months," Lewis predicted. "I think we're going to be talking much more about that than anything else. Do I think that this Christmas will somehow be defined by DVD playback? I genuinely don't think that will be the case,"
What about the material impact of the demise of HD-DVD on your console velocity, Chris? "I do not think that [the demise of HD DVD] will have any material impact on our console velocity." "And I think other factors, specifically our architecture around downloads, is far more advantageous and important for the future. We are best placed to offer that, we already offer that, our online pedigree is such that we will offer the best and most seamless experience."

I personally would have a physical copy of content..rather than a any day crash-able, corruptible medium..Blu-ray won..get over it already Microsoft..

^^ Guy up there, deepsme was talking about how Blu Ray will be defeated by digital downloads. Not what sexual intentions Blu Ray has for HD DVD. So do read the post before making comments

thanks..arien!..so to get this back on topic..would be interesting to know what medium you guys prefer..because this sort of indicates Microsoft has scrapped the idea of a blu-ray 360 add on..
So probably the next GEOW or the next Forza might now have to be digitally downloaded..or be sold on multiple dvd's..because i don't see games being limited to 9 gigs in the future..MGS4 already is using around 50gigs on blu-ray..
I personally feel these 2 forms can easily co-exist..but when it comes to the big game titles, the hollywood flicks, blu-ray definitely has the edge there...

I think multiple DVDs would work actually. Microsoft will have some backlash if they do an 'ultimate' console with games on HD DVD or something! And as for downloading games.. they can bugger off. Already have to make do with 8GB/month and speeds of 4000kb/s so a file of 50GB is going to be a serious problems. People would be better off driving like 5 cities away, buying multiple DVDs and then driving back and it'd still be downloading.
But I do think that films/games being sold physically on high capacity memory cards in the future making sense. Or being able to go to a download point with a portable HDD, paying a fee and then getting that down on an ultra fast connection onto there and transferring them on a mega fast connection like USB 3.0 to the actual games console or just playing them directly off the HDD.
Some ideas. I reckon they're viable.

Given the backlash caused by DRM and it's very public and humiliating downfall, I suspect that M$ were maybe hinting that by the word 'downloading', what they really mean is 'streaming'. You don't buy it, you rent it...

If Microsoft actually go down this path they will just end up with another failure like HD DVD. How many people do they actually think would be in support from this? Many people barely even have internet speeds to play games online, let alone download them. Besides, would we not all much rather a physical product that we can hold as well as use wherever we like? Which greatly lowers the risk of losing that game/media or proving it's faulty etc. I'd also rather pay in cash or by card over the counter than on the internet.
For example, music files are small and so usually download relatively quickly. Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3 is expected to exceed a 50Gb Blu-ray disc - can you just imagine the time it would take to download that?! Knowing my luck the download would fail at 90% and I'd have to start again, I've experienced that. Yeah ok, MGS4 won't be on the 360 but the games that will be on multiple discs may reach 20 or so Gb a game and that is still too much to download.
@ arien, I get 50kbps internet speed if I'm lucky... often drops to 10kbps and this is the maximum I can get where I live, and I don't live in the middle of no where either. 4000kbps is a dream for me, but I agree that even then a 50Gb game download would be a nightmare.

Yeah, but that's the thing: When Bill Gates dreamed up his vision of seamlessly integrating the Operating System and the Internet back in the early nineties (late eighties maybe?), he deliberately never took technical difficulties into account. Hence why Windows Active Desktop was so, well, crap.
M$ have never let little details like "not actually being able to do it yet" into account when they go making announcements like this. Maybe they think that rubbishing current technology makes them look more important and futuristic. And "cooler" than Google...

Well yeah, BluRay will of course die out at some stage. Just like VHS, and old vinyl records, but thats not to say it won't enjoy a good few years of life where it will be extremely profitable to the companies that use it!
I don't see downloads taking over too soon, cause so many people have internet plans with 1GB or 5GB maximums. They aren't gonna waste up to half of their monthly allowance on a single movie which they pay for anyway! Especially when renting it will cost half of owning a disc forever anyway.
And DVD ain't dead yet, and in my opinion it isn't showing much signs of slowing. I think Microsoft is falling into a trap, especially now they've announced there will be no BluRay add-on for Xbox 360.

Its a shame theyre not making a blu-ray add on because I'd have snapped that up for sure!!
Microsoft have already started with downloadable games on the Xbox Live Marketplace! But at the moment it's just normal old Xbox games. And it only benefits if you have the 120gbHD or the Xbox Elite !
