I downloaded a MP3 file ringtone that I really want to put onto my phone (W580i).

I succsesfully put it onto my phone and can see it on there. Its just that when I try to "Use this as your ringtone" it says that I can't!

Do I need to put it into a specific folder or convert it into a special format? I really really would appreciat some feedback!

Try going a different route to set it as your ring-tone:

Go to settings, scroll across to sounds and alerts and then choose ring signal. Then find your file and try setting it from there.

If that fails, then where did you download it from? If it is a song purchased from your mobile operator, or a company or an MP3 download site (similar to itunes), then it will probably be locked. This either means you can play it to listen to at your leisure, but it can't be set as a ring-tone because that is public playing of the song, and technically you should be paying money (royalties) every time you play a song in public. Or it means that you can only play it on the device you downloaded it onto in the first place (probably a computer).

If that is not the reason, then perhaps the song file is corrupt or not a valid file-type for the phone.

Its not a song though... its just a ring sound that kinda slows down. It sounds really cool anyways and is only like 5 seconds long. Its in MP3 format right now... what else should I try?

Well did you try my suggestion below?

Go to settings, scroll across to sounds and alerts and then choose ring signal. Then find your file and try setting it from there.

Now Tranced asked whether your phone is branded. This means does it have any advertising for your mobile network operator anywhere on the outside or in the software in the phone? What network are you on?

The phone IS branded with Rogers logo on the front.

Heres the deal. I have two folders. One is my phone memory and one is my memory card. I put the ringer as TWO different formats on both folders (MP3 and M4A). I then go to my "Setting" and then over to my "Ringtones"... go into my folder and its NOT in there. I have no idea what to do my sister phone is so much easier to do this kinda thing with.

If I cant use custom ringtones on my cell Im going to be pissed.

that's a problem. rogers uses to disable this. you'd probably need to debrand your phone(will need to flash it with a generic firmware).

I think you're trying to use the ringtone from the movie "Crank". It's a funny ringtone - makes it sound like your phone is dying partway through the ringtone lol.

Anyways.. This solution works with any mp3 you want to use on a Rogers phone:

I picked up a Rogers branded k850i today and none of my old ringtones worked.. So I converted them from .mp3 tones to .wav files using quicktime pro (many other softwares will do this for you). Load them back onto your phone and they can be selected as ringtones. Best to put them into the ringtones folder on your memory card.

Good luck!
