While we're all wondering when/if Sony Ericsson are going to release another flagship UIQ smart phone, I thought it would be interesting to look at the history of the P series so far.

The announcement dates are pretty accurate but the availability dates (UK) may be slightly out as some of these are based on online reviews.
(Apologies now if the HTML doesn't render properly)

PhoneAnnouncement dateGap between announcementsGeneral availability dateGap between announcement and availability
P800Mar 2002n/aFeb 200312
P900Oct 200320 Dec 20033
P910Jul 20049Dec 20046
P990Oct 200516Sep 200612
P1May 200719Aug 20074

So can we predict anything from this information?
Probably nothing conclusive. Sure, two phones were announced in October, two phones were announced in the first half of the year and one phone was announced in the middle of the year.

In terms of availability there is more of a pattern, which suggests even if a new phone is announced soon, it probably won't be available until the end of the year.

Which is a shame. I really enjoyed my old P900, eagerly awaited the P990 and was so disappointed by it that I skipped it and nearly bought a P1 but in reality this was just a fixed P990 in a better form factor.

I'd love to see come up with something stunning to compete with the wow factor of the iPhone, but I think time is running out and I'm seriously thinking of alternatives to Sony Ericsson now.

You mean you said too much *bullshit* before, kid?
What was that...uh in Barcelona, on Cebit? Yeah right
After being at Barcelona and Cebit and seeing no announcement being made whatsoever and seeing the Xperia, I doubt SE will be making any more efforts into the P series - or probably not as we know it - and IF, it will probably not happen anywhere near New Years time (I mean the announcement)

So would you please stop posting your shit here?

thank you

Hmm, perhaps that's true, but I can't help but think you could've phrased it a little better. [addsig]

Many of us are going to continue to skip from now on as they have ceded innovation for being average in this smart phone/entertainment market.
With the coming of Experia I doubt that will come with a P anytime soon. Experia seems to have a lot of what was called for but its not a P.
We will have to have faith in PK's words and see what happens but I am leaning towards seriously doubting in regards to seeing a P anytime before 2009.

I don't doubt that PK has a prototype smart phone and it may well be the next UIQ phone.
I also believe his intentions are true as *experience* has shown, if you were around at the time the P1 was all rumour.

However I believe his circumstances have changed and he's probably a lot closer to than during the P1 saga, which means he's probably being monitored over what he can and cannot say.

This just adds to the frustration unfortunately until give the OK to let more information out of the bag. Until then, anything he says will be treated by some as fact and every time a new show/event takes place we all think "this is the month"

It's just very, very, very frustrating waiting and hoping and even keeping the faith

Certainly I don't doubt PK but I still feel as though will want to get the Experia well soaked onto the market before announcing the next P in the series.

Don't hold your breath.

Set aside the licensing issues, the new Symbian version and the work that would take, the new hardware that would be necessary - and you still have a company that doesn't think very highly of offering a phone with a platform like UIQ. And have signalled very clearly that they see the future in terms of deals with telecoms, exclusive content and online- stores.

So as far as I'm concerned, the p-series is already dead for that reason. Since if there will be any new phones, the only thing that made Symbian and UIQ on SE possibly worthwhile in the first place is gone.

Of course - on the bright side you'll get the "new and improved" WM version that's already dated at the time it will be released, that nevertheless "fixes everything". Just like the previous four versions. Once again, a brilliant strategic stroke of.... stroke. From the strategists at SE (who apparently hate their company and wants to destroy it).
The p1 Whiki - report your bugs, and add feature requests here.

Why would they get rid of their flagship P series that has been so good to them? Well until the p990 debacle.
