W580i Corrupted Memory Sticks - Two in one Month |

All,
First, I had the 250MB M2 memory stick.
I used Windows to move some video files to it - after slowly filling the memory up, the phone said 'cannot copy...sector requested not found' at around 3/4 capacity.
I thought I'd corrupted the memory by removing the USB cable once -- when the PC became locked up, so I bought a 1GB stick last week.
Now, I'm having the exact same problem and message with the new memory stick - at about 3/4 capacity or 650MB, I get the message again and I can't fill up the memory beyond approx. 650MB.
I have not done anything improper (like removing the cable without ejecting the phone) this time, so I'm wondering what's going on here. I've removed the memory stick, reset the phone, replaced it - same problem.
This is especially frustrating since I paid for 1GB, got 946MB after the system took some, and now I'm down to about 640MB that I can actually use.
What's going on here, anyone have any ideas? I know I should probably just be happy with approx. 640MB, but it bothers me - I paid for 1GB.
Is my phone broken?
Any response is greatly appreciated in advance,

where did buy your memory sticks from ? are you sure they are not fake ?
most of these weird issues arise from fake memory sticks |

The first stick (250MB) came with the phone, second (1GB) was purchased at the AT&T store. Both are Sandisk.
I can still return the 1GB stick. I guess I'll try that and see what happens with the replacement.

on my phone, it is in the file manager > more > memory status > memory card > format
K700i > K750i > K810i (current phone)

Thanks for the replies.
Figured out how to format the memory stick.
Removed it, cleaned the contacts as best I could, formatted, and it worked!
I'm up to 900 MB stored on the phone.
To format on the W580i, it's: my stuff>more>memory status>(select memory stick)>more>format m. s. - it only takes 4 seconds!
Thanks for your help,
