It seems that the new Xperia x1 it has HTC developed software:

This is also the reason why I would hesitate buying the X1. Already been burnt by the TyTN II and it's horrid multimedia performance. The TyTN II has Qualcomm's MSM7200 chipset while the X1 has the MSM7200A. Anyone ready to bet that the X1 will be a new star at HTCClassAction.org?

Im sure HTC are going to announce a WM device with better specs than X1, they wouldn't give the competition a better advantage.

But the X1 is produced by HTC so how can it be in competition?

It's simply a way of increasing market share for HTC, and reducing production cost for SE. Especially for HTC, having competing products on the market means that they simply can't loose, by default they are including SE's customer base into their own buisiness.

SE, on the other hand, increases it's profile at relatively little cost in terms of R&D/production.

Thie kind of thing happens all the time, with computers/washing powder/baked beans/whatever...
