Question for P800 owners - P800 & music files |

Hello all you lucky P800 owners.
One of the main functions I want is good music playback.
On my (just sold) iPAQ I could got away with very small files in wma format 48Kbps. With my T68 in mp3 format I had to have them at 96Kbps to be good enough for me.
Does the P800 support mp3Pro or wma or is it just bog standard mp3?
Is the sound as good as that on an iPAQ or dedicated mp3 player?
Are the supplied earplugs any good and does the phone use the smaller phono jack?
Any news on the bigger DUO cards.
Thanks for any feedback in advance.

the sound in the headphones is very good indeed! And the loudspeaker goes rather loud! now, I am not sure if it supports wma, but post a link to such a file, and I will try to download it and test!
as for mp3 it supports any bitrate I think, I have one mp3 with 56 bitrate, and it works just fine! I kept the bitrate down to save space, eagerly awaiting a larger MS DUO! (7 minutes file, 2,5MB , the quality was just fine for me)
the jack is small, unfortunately! but the earplugs are surprisingly good.. but they would most likely loose against any other headset (not earplugs) on the market! |

Not sure what this music is but here are some .wma files I found quickly on the web. The files are self extracting zip files (if you don't want run the .exe file then change file extension to .zip and extract the .wma file).

Just a stupid question...
Is it right that the P800 doesn't play MP3 as ringtones????
That would really disappoint me. Even more since it supports MP3 anyway. |

Can P800 play mp3 both from internal and MS Duo?Do i have to transfer all mp3's in the internal memory or it can play them directly from MS DUo?? |

You can play it directly from the Duo. |

I have read all the forum info on music files on P800 and now completed my tests to see if the P800 can play mp3Pro.
This info is of course based purely on my hearing.
First of all, I have never been happy with the quality of standard mp3's below 96Kbs but could not really tell much between 96kbs & 128kbs.
On my iPAQ which plays wma files I could go as low as 48kbs and sound just as good as 96kbs mp3, this was great especially with a 256MB side card
With the P800 only currently having 16MB and one of my main uses for the P800 is to use as an mp3 player I wanted to see if it did play mp3pro files.
After configuring dBPowerAMP music converter with the Thomson mp3pro encoder I created the default 64kbs mp3pro files from some 128kps mp3's.
With the PC Thomason player I was amazed at how well the music sounded compared to a normal 64kbs mp3 file.
With the P800 I initially thought the mp3pro files sounded slightly better (less distortion) but when comparing to a 96kbs or 128kbs mp3 there is no comparrison, the sound is so much richer (gets the hairs standing up on your arms).
So, the P800 will actually play mp3pro files but only at the same quality as a normal mp3 file. You need a proper mp3pro decoder in the P800 to get the benefit.
Will have to stick with 96kbs mp3 until some clever programmer gets mp3pro or wma to work
Just as a note. With a good quality music file, I find the P800 sounds better than the iPAQ.

You can stand a 64kbps MP3Pro through the headphones!?!?! God, I tried the MP3 Pro thing... but I couldn't bear anything below 128kbps (which is about 192kbps in standard mp3 format)
Since my entire collection is in mp3 format anyway...re-encoding them to mp3pro just for the P800 isn't really a big deal... I can wait for the 128MB Duo instead and just use my original files.
The P800 doesn't support WMA since this is a Windows format.
AMR is supposed to be a good alternative (so I've heard anyway...I'm not sure) supposed to be smaller than MP3s... but I can't seem to find an encoder from mp3s. Does anyone know how to encode AMR? |

No, 96kbs for mp3. Find mp3pro at 96kbs no different. |
