@boba

how do you know that the camera used in the above review is not a prototype?? (basically; every unit before the release is considered a prototype.... hehe.. those images are even bad for a Pre pre prototype unit)

those images are so horrible.... they are clearly and loudly shouting: faulty camera !!! (gsmarena pics are far better than these)

all the images in that review have a horrible blurry area in the left-side (you can check)

what do expect from a phone with a 4.2mm focal length , tiny cmos sensor with 5 megapixels, it maybe a prototype but unless se suddenly change the hardware i can safely say the photos from the final released units will be no better.

I've never seen a pre-production handset that has changed significantly by the time it's released.

Obviously there are tweaks, but the hardware doesn't change so what you see in a prototype is pretty much it. If it has a crap CMOS sensor then tweaking the algorithms can only go so far.

The fact is, we know the 5MP sensor in the K850i is bad and the C902 by all accounts is going to be worse. Then I see some of the photos taken with the (unofficial) camera software for the K770i, T650i and of course the K800/K810. It makes me wonder why SE doesn't just stick with a decent 3.2MP sensor.

Oh, wait, it's because Joe Public want higher numbers. 5 is better than 3.2. God knows what their 7, 8 or 10MP sensor will be like when their next handset gets to be about 9mm thick or something!

dam the dum public i can't buy a high-end handset this time because there all 5megapixels and alot worse cam quality than my k800, i'm looking at the c702 at the moment sure it's missing a couple of cam features but it's only 3.2megapixels and should take alot better pics than the c902. chances are that the manufactures won't even bother increasing the sizes of sensors or quality of lens there just cram in more megapixels because it costs them basically nothing to do that and everyone will buy the phone thing the extra megapixels makes the cam quality better.

well it's not released yet so until it's offically released it's a prototype.

We ALWAYS wait until the final version, but I can't think of any handset that has had any major changes between showing off a pre-release and the final offering.

Bear in mind;

1) The handsets they show the press, public and BUYERS (i.e. distributors and networks) aren't going to be shown something really bad. I'm actually surprised nobody has yet said to a company, 'well, why are you showing it now if it's so far from finished?'. (Bear in mind, we're talking about public announcement models here, not some sneaky prototype shown privately and then leaked out).

2) SE isn't starting from scratch with each and every new cameraphone. Would SE get away with saying the K810i is 'not final' when we all know it was a K800 in a new shell? Likewise, the camera algorithms and the sensor won't always change from one model to the next.

3) The hardware is usually the first thing signed off, so they won't suddenly go 'you know what? the camera sucks, we'll change it'. From announcing it, it's a case of how quick to get it into production and finding the buyers to take it. That pretty much sets the release date.

Now, when it comes to other aspects (like the UI) then with SE I can well believe they will make changes, except they prefer not to do it in time for the release but about 18 months after.

hey boys....

do not take those samples too seriously they either had a SUPER faulty unit or have done that on a purpose....

here's some samples from Gsmarena
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_c902-review-223p3.php

gsmarena:
"Judging the camera quality of a beta unit is a risky business. Even so, it's clear the C902 camera is a capable shooter. The images are crisp with nice detail. Noise level is relatively low, especially with sufficient light. The autofocus camera does very well at close-ups. Color rendering is relatively good; yet all colors are a bit cold. We think they need some 10-15% more saturation to ride high."

100% crop between U900 C902 and N95 8gb

@chombos:

The cropped images looked similar sharpness wise. only color rendering makes difference and imo, camera tweaks can do the job. even u900 which has a tiny 5mp sensor manages to match N95's sharpness so i bet once the proper algorithm was applied G900 and C902 images will not look as bad as what we have seen on the recent prototype samples.

The sensor is smaller than the K850i so how can it take better photos? No amazing code will fix a lack of light getting to the sensor in the first place. Amplifying the image to make it brighter means losing all detail and sharpness.

I agree that these photos may be worse than the camera could produce, but I hope people aren't expecting any miracles.

where is the proof that the sensor is smaller? it could be the same size as k850 for allwe know..
