Dell will unveil a smartphone based on Google's Android platform and it'll do so at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show in Barcelona next month.

At least, that's what unnamed "senior industry sources" cited by UK trade paper Marketing Week claim.

It also admitted Google insiders say that there's no near-future announcement on the calendar.

Google announced the open source, Linux-based Android back in November 2007, and while the platform's pitched as a Google initiative, it has plenty of support, mobile phone majors like Samsung and Motorola among them. Android's tied firmly into Google's online apps, and is essentially a way to get the advertising company's 'word from our sponsor' wares out in front of eyes on the move.

ok dude ... Google phone = Andriod. There is NO "Google phone" made by Google themselves, because they are a software/advertisement/search company. Hardware & R&D for that hardware will cost them an arm & a leg; and they'll be newb's in that respect. However major partnerships with TI & HTC to get the ball rolling with Motorola, Samsung, and possibly Nokia (we'll see), along with others is MUCH MUCH easier.

The first known prototype is from HTC, but there is another chinese/taiwanese companies that have fully running prototypes already running apps. So we'll see how the iPhone 3G model - with no multitasking - goes against RIMM's BlackBerry lineup, vs Andriod.

The processor partner is Qualcomm actually with support for the msm 7200A processor. There is also a Samsung Android in the pipeline, with HTC and Samsung going neck to neck in releasing the first Android.

IN my opinion rather than giving the iPhone or Blackberries a run for their money, its actually going to compete more with the likes of Symbian.

No, or?

SEs Xperia has windows mobile 6.1 as operating system (OS)

And Android is an OS, same for Windows Mobile and symbian.

SE's Xperia is a handset series. X1 is one particular model running WM. Like P is a series with P1 a particular model using Symbian as an OS.

Android is an OS, like Symbian, or WM, or LJ

Moreover, Google doesn't have the capability of manufacturing phones, at least not at the moment.

Google would be stupid to get into the mobile phone market, their expertise is software.

That said, what's to keep Google from spending development resources ensuring that their OS will run on as a many hardware platforms as possible?

Getting Android to run on HTC, Motorola, SE, Nokia, etc. sets should technically be a simple matter of writing the device specific drivers and compiling the OS and application stack for specific hardware architectures.

Just take a look at the Open Handset Alliance members.
