Why Does My k810i Work in Japan? |
smoochy Joined: Dec 23, 2007 Posts: 59 From: Bali PM |
I'm really confused. I've recently arrived in Japan and using an Indonesian SIM, I am getting SOFTBANK service here. I thought Japan had their own CDMA only type network and nothing else worked here.
How is this possible? |

softbank and docomo if not mistaken using UMTS (3G)
Not all Japan operator using CDMA
Even now they have new phone for DOCOMO which support UMTS and GSM (for roaming) |

Apparently 3G is the greatest thing ever! Since I never, ever expected to be able to send and receive SMS on and Indo SIM in Japan, this has been a great surprise. Unfortunately, I have no data setup since I don't have Softbank's settings, but I really don't need it anyway. Just to have SMS is making my day!
For all of you who love Japanese SE phones, here is the only one I found today. I was looking for the new cyber-shot models but no luck yet.
Cheers!

I wish I could, but I'm not going to be here more than a day or two. Kind of a transit stop. Too bad though, I'd love to go check out Akihabara again. Electronics to make your head spin. I'll do what I can and try to post later!
Cheers!

Hi smoochy,

I don't think you need them and SoftBank tend to protect their settings these days! They can be found but becoming harder to do so.
If you are roaming, then you can use web etc, but be careful, I ran up a big bill, using data in Japan. I am with Vodafone UK.

No wonder you got your Indonesian SIM to work in roaming using your 3G K810.
Among several operators (if I'm not mistaken 3 operators - KDDI, Voda and NTT Docomo) - NTT is the only one operating in UMTS and yes, we all can easily roam there.
By the way, I remember astonished faces of fellow japanese whom I met during my trip to Japan last year looking at my K800. It was all about it's bar form-factor which is not typical for phones sold in Japan (its most commonly clamshell as you all know). |

Hi!
I roam using SoftBank. Vodafone does not exist in Japan anymore.
When I switch my phone on it picks up Docomo and SoftBank quickly.
I have used a Sharp 902, S-E W950i and other phones during my visits !
Next visit March!
