w910- serious advice needed quickly |

hello everyone and good evening (UK)
ive got a lot of explaining but im in some serious need of advice and opinion.
So yesterday i decided to upgrade my phone on orange as I was eligible for it and was paying too much (now paying £25 for 600mins and unlimited texts which isnt too shabby- much better thn my old contract though tis a lengthy 18 months)
They also gave me an upgrade handset- i decided to go for the w910 after seeing it and thinking it was alright. This and the fact that my previous handset was w850, which I was very happy with in general, and w910 seems to be the next generation walkman slider from SE.
I got the phone through the mail today...iuts sitting in front of me...but am yet to register it--- I got busy on lengthy reviews and forums etc. following my almost blind decision and seems the majority of the banter is negative towards the handset - bad software versions, impracticality, not very good audio progression from previous devices...all of this makes me very very sceptical about even beginning to register it.
I stuck my old sim in and gave it a whirl before considering signing my life off (well, 18 months of) to a seemingly lacklustre device...on the whole, I found it to be quite good and relatively impressive, although this is first glance and I know that all of you have hd much more experience with it since release (not too sure on the keyboard for texting though..views?)
furthermore, the orange branding is absolutely terrible. they typically change the icons in the menu meaning the themes dont change anything except for main screen (can get used to this tho it is annoying), but theyve now stuck this absolutely horrendous, IMO impractical (the full menu, where you can access all the things here, is one button away you idiots) menu on the MAIN SCREEN which partially covers the image or nice eclipse thing u might have and changes the format of the clock so even when u change it to large in the menu like i preferably had on my old w850, it doesnt do anything.
This really really annoyed me and I know all phones have branding etc. and I know it wont do any good, but I'm actually going to ring up orange and complain about branding especially on this cos it just looks crap and totally ruins the otherwise sleek and stylish design and usage of the phone. Is safe and reliable debranding available for w910 yet?
Anyway, rant aside, my real concern is whether i should stick with the handset having heard so much negative stuff about it and other peoples problems. I really enjoyed the w850 and it was my first phone after 3310! It has seved me well and offered functionality, ease of use and a good mp3 player.
These are probably the main things i'm looking for, though a camera is a nice addition as i dont have a digital camera at all (tho the one on this phone is quite shoddy) I couldnt give a cr*p bout the near laughable motion system- absolute waste if you ask me and how many people are going to use that in the long run to change tracks when the phone is nicely tucked in your trouser pocket? (although think the pedometer idea etc on the w580 is heading in the right direction)
I am primarily looking for ease of use, functionality (not too big though-like the slender design here- no thicker than my w850 warhorse), durability and a good mp3 system with audio clarity which ive heard is lacking on the w910 (i am an audiophile who originally chose w850 to merge need for phone and mp3, and familarity with Sony brandname (previous fone was a 3310!- didnt know they were such deviants of the phone market behind all the nice bus adverts and "love music" crap etc.) and was happy with the overall result.
However, should I return the handset and wait for soemthing like the w890 or get w960 or even go completely different for NOKIA xpress or a samsung. I'd like to stay with SE cos familiar with the system etc. now and i want to stay on orange for loyalty to build up, but right now i could even perhaps get a free iPod nano with my new contract with orange, getting rid of the need for a good mp3 player (ends friday) and get a SE k-series phone instead, if w910 is really as big a pile of crap as ive heard...
Would be very grateful to hear your thoughts on this, especially as i need to make a decision soon (wouldn't make such a big post and rant on for so long but i do use my phone a lot and want something that works, and doesnt die on me, especially in an 18 month contract- kind of regretting my rushed decision and lack of research yesterday). If you think i should change, what handsets do you recommend for my needs or otherwise (say if i were to get an iPod nano etc..).
Many thanks for reading and any replies much appreciated.
Ashby
ps; quick one if forgot; if i stick with w910 and get say a 4gb m2 card, will loading songs be drastically slower and slow down the interface? |

Hiya
I just upgraded my W850i to the new w910i at first it felt abit slow with the menus and txts and they have changed the software keys abit which took a day or two to get used to. The screen is fantastic! The phone feels solid and really well put together. I got the thems from my W850 and they work a treat on the w910s bigger screen too (same resolution).
The music player still plays as good music as the w850 and head phones are great as per usual with the Walkmans.
Can say im getting happier and happier was wondering if it had been the right decision at first but after a week i love it! Best walkman i have ever had and it plays movies as well .
Now do not for a second believe that this is a camera phone the camera is pretty modest, 2mp but it takes some desent pictures if there is light. I much prefer the old w800 i had for taking pictures that was fantastic proably the best at the time. Now the w910 is a slim very light phone with a really nice feel the keys are diffrent and again takes a bit getting used to compared to the w850 the round direction key which i use the most works well it is not as destinct or as big as the one on the w850 and with my big fingers it took a bit getting used to but it is nothing bad.
Again the standard set up with the menus and quick menus arnt the best on my 02 and why they keep putting there O2 theme on i have no idea as it is crap and it was the first thing i got rid of.
The only thing im disapointed of is the motion control of the screen lay out it is useless doesnt work so it is best switched off and you will never miss it. They should have stuck to the step counter thing ala w580 much better.
THere you go make your own mind up. I would happily recommend this as a music and media phone.
Best screen around!! And the quality of the phone excellent!
ps will put a picture up in a sec.
Oh and to awnser your question, it work ok with a 4gb m2 i just moved mine from the w850, had it in a converter in the 850.

The orange menu onscreen you can remove (turn off) in settings-> homescreen. FYI Orange isnt getting W960 due to poor sales in W950. Who ever selects the handsets for Orange UK needs a gentle ass kicking. I found out too that Orange are going to do the N95 8Gb either... or the N82. Sorry mate. But have faith! Im sure you enjoy Orange wednesdays.

bout the only thing i enjoy with orange! Anyone on orange who doesn't take advantage of OW is not getting their moneys worth. But not too bothered bout other handsets you mentioned. Now that ive seen how big the w960 is and how little id use all the things it offers.
also @ JiSM; you might have actually jus swayed it there for me . I didnt make it too obvious that i only used the phone for all of 5 minutes, but i was kind of assuming that it would be a crappy, in fact, terrible orange implemetation which you couldnt switch off. Had a bit more of a play with the handset and seems very nice.
However, increasingly thinking bout k850 now, specially as it offer similar media centre and music capabilities- 2 things which i enjoy bout newer walkman phones (minus senseme and shakeme which i wouldnt use anyway) plus a top notch digital camera (if i had it, id use it).
Different design, granted, but im used to the chunk of w850 and even 3310 so that wouldnt be too much of an issue.
Big concern is buttons on k850. Ok for texting? or w910 better (didnt think much of them myself)? Going to go have a look in the shop now.
Please keep giving advice. Looks like k850 or w910 really but not sure if k850is fully feasible as i want a good music playing handset. Views?

the branding on the w850 was quite discreet but the sticket which it came on has now fallen off of my w850 for orange.
had a quick look in the orange shop at the k850i. In my view its more practical and well made than the w910 (i prefer 850 buttons) but i didnt realise (dont know how i missed this inthe reviews etc.) it had a touch screen menu interface thing. Not too sure bout this (views?) and its practicality as i text a lot. That and he mentioned the lack of manual shutter gets a bit annoying at times with the lag on the phone. He said it has had problems as well and seemed a bit unsure.
He did show me dummy version of w890. Very nice body and design and good keyboard unlike 880. But still i cannot warrant use of extra walkman features and a pretty useless (no AF or flash) camera..plus no doubt it will be buggy on launch specially with first batches which id probably be getting, and id have to wait for orange web to get the device. Think i'm gonna go for k850..
Phoned orange and organised sending w910 back. Annoying thing is because i am returning it i am not eligible for free ipod nano as i stated before (could have used this or made a bit of money or gift or something) and i have to pay 6 quid P&P etc. but small price to pay i consider in the long run of an 18 month contract...

w910- serious advice needed quickly.
W910-No-No
No Firmware Release-Bad Camera-Slightly Wobbly Slider-Phone Restart Problems.Phone Shutdown Problems
K850-No
No Firmware Release-Slow UI-Media Player Laggy/To much of problems
ie-dust,finger print.noisy pictures, automatic shutter doesnt open sometimes etc.
SO neither
I suggest W960i.
Impressively slim.Amazing features.Walkman 8gb with cool visualization,wifi,3.2mp af.Although not perfect.Its the best walkman ATM.I strongly recommend w960i.

i agree with itouch the w960 is a very nice phone,
also to add the k850i downsides list, really crappy 5mp camera that produces grainy pics with werid washed out colours. |

i also agree about the w960i, but its very expensive here in the uk (i think its only on o2 atm).
dont forget that the w960i uses a Symbian OS, not the normal java os most SE phones use
K700i > K750i > K810i (current phone)

i was thinking about w960 but orange aren't doing it (see 3rd post) apparently. Plus to be honest, its quite hefty and don't like the look of the OS...its a bit mroe like a palmpilot or soemthing and dontt hink id need all the features...k850 seems to be about as negative as w910 now that ive said this though...anyone got anything positive to say about any SE phone?

Well besides the quality of the phone, I can not say there are any better put together phones.
SE have most highends phones it really depends what your needs are, I was concidering either a W890i (which is not out yet in the UK) or the W910i. And since my main criteria was great music and screen on the phone i went for the W910i. I looked at 02s own phone (Windows) and the LGs and the Samsungs and the Nokia all I think are below in quality.
Looked at the iPhone and it didn't seem as a good phone plus its expensive.
You have to remember all phones are in a way a compromise for there own special feature or they would be huge bricks. |

This is true, only have to look at the n95 for proof of that. Seems to have everything but in my eyes is a bit of a whopper.
However, i dont know much about the mobile industry but sure there is a lot to do with marketing as well. Surely companies could look at all the benchmarks on websites in reviews and all these types of forums to gain suggestions and improvements and put it all into one device. However they wouldnt have any customers left for future devices if they satisfied the customer with one device that ticked all the boxes: companies have got a market strategy in diff ways; SE for example has walkman phones and k-series phones (nothing to say they could have implemented walkman 3.0, sensme and shakeme on k850 for example, or even a5mp with w960 etc.) which are aimed at different markets, so spreads the risk of failure etc. Also other factors like branding (walkman name, Apple's ipod success) which help. Tis interesting business im sure.
