That would be the mount for an external antenna underneath the plastic lid, I guess.

It's generally used with the car holder for an external antena.
I have the P1 car holder but fortunately I never had lack of signal inside my car.

it just internal antena model, p990i and m600 have same model to, without it your p1i might have antane on the top. like most cdma phone

It's the external antenna connector when you are in a car or in a house where the signal is not that great. Never needed one, romanian coverage is awesome.

You'll find most SEs have them, but I think they don't get used that often. I've noticed more and more lately that SE is releasing phones without them. Must be becoming a somewhat redundant feature.
