Owners of Blu-ray DVD players may find themselves frozen out of future developments in the technology because their machines are not upgradeable.
The Blu-ray camp has recently rolled out new features for players, which include picture in picture options.
But the majority of Blu-ray players sold to date do not have the necessary hardware to offer the features.
Some discs already come with a note telling users that they may need to upgrade software in their machine.
In some discs, the note reads: "To ensure the best possible viewing experience, your Blu-ray disc player may need a firmware or software update."

Another reason to buy a PS3 It supports blu-ray firmware upgrades, the PS3 blu ray drive can also play divx files now, which it didn't earlier..also BD Live is coming soon..a nice add-on feature.

As with all new technology the first models will not have the full features that come with time. Remember all the people paying thousands of pounds for plasma TV's when they were new even though they were still SD and soon made worth very little by the onset of HD versions.
As for Blu-Ray it should be noted that all players will be able to play the main features and it is only special extras such as p-i-p and web access that will require profile 1.1 or 2.0 etc.
The majority of people buy films for the main feature anyway and I know that I quite often never watch the special features on DVDs
And of course as already mentioned the PS3, which is the biggest selling Blu-Ray device, is able to be updated to support any new profile so I don't think it is a very big problem to be honest.
