Barcelona is a good place to visit, but it's full of thieves and prostitutes. I was there in November for the Rangers game, I was mightily unimpressed with the fact that they spend fortunes cleaning the streets, the place was immaculate, but they did nothing when we got mugged, 750euro, and a mobile phone. They just weren't interested. But the streets are clean.

really? Barcelona is fast becoming one of my fav Europe places and last time I was there with my wife, in October, we walked absolutely everywhere from the city to the Gaudi park and back via different routes etc.
We both had backpacks and I had my garmin GPS out in the open. Never felt threatened once and I'm not your typical tourist as I am always looking for possible trouble around me.
Actually, first night there this time we got a little lost at night and walked through a ghetto area not far from Ramblas and there we did feel a little uncomfortable but no one approached us.
what part were you mugged in?

I liked it too but only went when i was 15 on a school trip for like a day, would like to go back for a bit longer maybe later in the year.

Mugged on Las Ramblas, about 200 yards up the hill from the place de catalunya. There was a lot of bother, but in fairness they might have been out the woodwork to target the 25,000 or so drunk Scotsmen. Beautiful city though, the Marina was great to visit and chill out for a bit. We were there for a week, long after the football crowd had gone home, and especially in and around Las Ramblas we saw a lot of insavoury behaviour - though it has to be said we were probably on the lookout for it by that point!

well i'll be there at the congress! I went there two years ago to cover 3GSm... reached BCN @ midnight and got lost at ramblas trying to find my hostel... was carrying a lot of stuff but people were really helpful... or probably i was lucky...
