BERLIN (Reuters) - The owner of a small German computer company has fired three non-smoking workers because they were threatening to disturb the peace after they requested a smoke-free environment.

The manager of the 10-person IT company in Buesum, named Thomas J., told the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper he had fired the trio because their non-smoking was causing disruptions.

Germany introduced non-smoking rules in pubs and restaurants on January 1, but Germans working in small offices are still allowed to smoke.

"I can't be bothered with trouble-makers," Thomas was quoted saying. "We're on the phone all the time and it's just easier to work while smoking. Everyone picks on smokers these days. It's time for revenge. I'm only going to hire smokers from now on."

I'd say nice one for rebelling even though I don't like the idea of smoking, making a point is more important.

He didn't fire them for "not smoking", did he? he fired them for causing trouble about people smoking in the same office. Well, if you don't like the way the company is run and you're not at the top of the heap then you have a simple choice: Comply with the bosses rules or find another job.

...Discrimination? You're right. To only hire smokers (which is what I think you meant) is discrimination. Which makes a change from the much more common discrimination against smokers that occurs regularly when it comes to matters of employment

Aaaah, yes...

But employers are reluctant to hire smokers because the majority of them are considerate and do indeed go elsewhere to smoke.

Wasting 10 minutes of "valuable" company time, allegedly.

This guy smokes. It's his office. He'd rather his staff smoke in the office and answer the phones than go outside and leave them unattended.

If you don't smoke or don't like it, don't go for a job there.

Everybody's happy

@mcrosser

As far as I understood the story, I don't think that revenge was his main motive. The non-smokers were causing trouble and therefore presumably disrupting the operation of the office and so possibly loosing the company money. If you cause too much trouble at work for whatever reason, you get the sack and so from that point of view I think he was quite within his rights and absolutely correct to do what he did.
