Warner Bros has today announced that it will exclusively release HD content on the Blu-ray format and will no longer be publishing content on the HD-DVD in order to help end consumer confusion.

This is another large step towards settling the format "war" as Warner Bros represents about 20 percent of DVD sales in the US market.

NEW YORK/LOS ANGELES, Jan 4 (Reuters)
Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp's Blu-ray format, dealing a big blow to Toshiba Corp's rival HD DVD technology.

Warner Bros, Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs, representing about 18 to 20 percent of sales in the United States, was one of the few studios that backed both formats.

All sides of the format war had agreed it was confusing to consumers and a stumbling block for a potential multibillion-dollar industry.

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.

20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Co, and Lionsgate are among studios backing the Blu-ray format.
Viacom Inc's, Paramount studios and General Electric's NBC Universal release movies in HD DVD format.

Was kinda hoping this would end without a "war" between formats..
Why can't both just stick around? Grr.

For the exact reason Warner gave, multiple formats are just confusing for customers and is currently slowing sales of both as people wait to make sure they don't buy the wrong one.

Even if both become popular you know that the average consumer would end up buying the wrong format for their player and complaining when it didn't work

A classic example of this is someone my uncle knows who bought a Pingu DVD for his kids and then took it back saying they had sold him a foreign one because he was confused by Pingu's language!

Multi-format players would definitely make it expensive as the two technologies require different hardware.

It seems this decision from Warner Brothers may indeed turn out to be a pivotal moment as there has been some considerable reaction to it:

New Line also drops HD-DVD in favour of Blu-Ray. This should come as no surprise as New Line are actually owned by Warner Bros. but it further depletes the HD-DVD catalogue after May 2008 when the companies contracts end.

HD-DVD manufacturer Toshiba has released a statement regarding the Warner Bros. decision which in itself suggests they are concerned, such companies tend not to release statements in quick response unless they see it as a significant development.

The statement describes Toshiba's surprise and disappointment at the decision to drop their technology and says they will now "assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps."

HD-DVD Press Conference at CES cancelled.

The North American HD DVD Promotion Group were due to holda conference at the Consumer Electronics Show on Sun 6th Jan and have issued the following statement:
Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference scheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 8:30 p.m. in the Wynn Hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The cancellation of the CES conference really does suggest that HD-DVD is in trouble now as a company confident of success in their product would surely use the conference as a perfect opportunity to give a positive response.

Michael Bay, director of Transformers, was reportedly very angry with Paramount Studios when they refused to publish his Transformers film on Blu-Ray last year. Following the Warner Bros. announcement Bay has posted his opinions on the matter on his forum:

Well another studio down. Maybe I was right? Blu ray is just better. HD will die a slow death. It's what I predicted a year ago. Now with Warner's down for the count with Blu Ray. That makes it easier for Wal-Mart to push Blu Ray. And whatever Wal-Mart pushes - wins. Hd better start giving out those $120 million dollars checks to stay alive. Maybe they can give me some so I can give it to my Make-A-Wish charity, just to shut me up. Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day!

Not a bad deal at all
Many people will still wait for players to become cheaper but for those who want to get into high definition films now that is a great starter

I dont see the point in spending £250 on a Blue ray player when you can add a bit more and you get a games console too.

But anyways im happy i didnt by the HD DVD player for the Xbox 360.
