Just got an email about this, in the picture it shows the w580i with the transmitter connected where the volumes buttons are!

Anyone else get this email?

Pretty funny.

The device itself is an FM radio transmitter for £30 which works on your car stereo or other radio.

Useful in some circumstances.

I have the predecessor, the MMR-60, and it's almost completely useless. The output from the transmitter is so weak that it will not allow stereo reception if used in a car. Even if I keep the phone on the dash board with less than two feet distance to the car's antenna I still do not get good sound.

I suppose that they have fixed those problems in MMR-70, since I have perfect sound in my car drom the transmitter. Only problem is to find a frequency that is not already in use by a radio station. You must keep in mind that a car is in pracise a Faraday's cage, and the radio signal is therefore very much contained inside, while the car antenna normally is on the outside of the car. In my car, the radio antenna is actually glued as a strip on one of the side windows, and therefore, it can receive signals from the inside of the car as good as from the outside.

Can anybody else tell me about their experiences with either the 60 or 70 for usage in-car? I have a Jap import Toyota Levin and it only has a Mini Disc player and I was planning to get an FM transmitter rather than a new head unit.

Has anybody else had experience where the signal is too weak for inside a car? I can only buy the MMR-60 version here in NZ at the moment so I'd be interested to find out!

As I already have mentioned, I have only good experiences of my MMR-70. The only pity is that it cannot be used together with the car charger, since the cable of the charger comes out of the contact at the back and not at the side. How did they think att ?

I Have MMR-60 and in my car the reception is good and the sound is very clear... however its almost useless to me cause it drains the phone battery in about 1hour and i cant charge it at the same time :S. So in conclusion its better to buy a fm transmitter with its own car charger and 3,5mm input than this s**** from SE

I don't suppose by any chance this transmits the current song title on RDS does it?

My mate has one that does this for his ipod and it is rather cool.

Yes it does. There is another thread about this here.

rather silly of them I agree

try get an old car charger, you can probably cut the end off and modify it so that it fits on a car charger and acts as an extender to plug the mmr-70 into?

IMHO, the fastport connector is not very good. The only thing that holds it in place in the phone's socket are the two plastic springs, that tend to weaken after a time of usage, and it is not unusual that you have to yank the contact back and forth or remove the plug and insert it again in order to have the phone to recongise that the plug is connected. I have already left my phone with the charger connected over night a couple of times only to find that the battery is still drained in the morning, due to poor contact in the connection. Therefore, using the contact from an old charger may cause problems, since I think that it is the contact itself that will die first.
However, at least on the CST-75 standard charger that came with the K800, there is a tiny philips screw on the connector housing, and if you remove that, it is possible to open the connector's housing. I suppose that the car charger is designed the same way. If so, I believe that it should be possible to carve a new hole in the housing for the cable with an aproriate tool and reroute the cable so that it exits sideways instead of backwards. For the moment, however, I don't think that the battery drainage due to the radio transmitter is bigger than if I use the earplugs, and the battery lasts far longer than the time I spend in the car, so currently, this is not a problem other than that I cannot charge the battery and use the phone at the same time. Also, I hope that the designers put the exit of the cable where it is for a reason other than pure stupidity, and thus, it may be the case that the transmitter would function poorly with the charger connected.
