K850i 'Cyber-shot' Dust issue - My Fix! |

The Sony Ericsson K850i has had a fault identified by the majority of its users, with Dust issues and dust getting behind the lens cover.
I have developed a 'fix' of some sort - which I thought my be useful for some of the K850i users out there!
The body of the phone was opened, and the rear of it exposed, from where I removed the Glass lens cover which sits over the actual camera lens cover. It looks correct now, and is more like how the K850i should have been, not with a cover, OVER the cover - I have attached a picture to show the result - I hope this helps!

seems that se fans are more smart how to manage dust bugs, maybe se should give more space for swedish ( former /// ) workers, at lesat they know how to make quality fones and let the asian friends learn and develope theself...

Hey Guys,
The phone was very easy to open, I used my Credit Card, although any plastic card will do the trick - and no, I did not use anything to clean the Glass, I actually removed it - so there is no Glass cover!
It seems to have improved my photos - So thats an upside!
Plus, I have been a Sony Ericsson user (and keen mechanic!) for a long time - just be careful not to crack the back surface of the phone.
Good Luck! |

Let us know how it goes from now on. Any damage by doing this or any maintenance issue should be reported. |

But doesn't that expose the lens to pick up scratches? I can do with a few specs of dust but what if the lens gets scratched???

Glad to see that there are other SE users too that agree that it was dummy and a big mistake by SE to put a glass cover over the actual lens cover on k850.
That is a clever solution to the problem, but do people have to open up the device to get over the problem, and at the same time lose the warranty of a brand new phone?
For the moment I prefer the k810. |

YOU REMOVED THE GLASS ?????????????????
ARE YOU CRAZY...... HE HE HE HE ?????????
the lens cover is made in very thin plastic and will break very easily (if you get something stiff right to it...keys, etc, etc) !!!!!
did you remove the glass just because of the dust ??? or some else reason ???
...i think the protection glass dosent make your pictures worse.....(maybe this talk about polarized film on the glass had maybe improve the quality...but no glass..njjaaa)
you know this new guy "GERBAN"...he learned me some new outdoor tricks, and they worked very well...so im quite satisfield with my k850 right now )
do you have some pics now & before (whit & whitout the glass ?????
ps can you put the glass back with out any problem ???? or must you break something to put it back ???

Well, every camera phone has same protection over the lens. It is just problem here that it is oversized and can be scratched.
But phone is made to be fashion gadget, I really don't see a problem here.. I use SE sock (I got it here in China) and it is protected very well. I think SE should provide one sock of quality material to keep such a beauty piece intacted.
There is really no need to remove anything from it.... |

Well Guys,
It has been a day - and my GlassLess K850i is fine, no dust specs (obviously), no damage to the auto lens cover, no issues whatsoever.
Removing the Glass Lens cover was easy, it is just attached using a ring of sticky adhesive - just a bit of force loosens it easily. It can be replaced easily too, if you want to!
No im not crazy lol - I just thought it was poor engineering from Sony Ericsson which led to the dust issue - so I fixed it myself!
You dont have to break anything in order to remove the Glass Lens cover, just pick it off. It looks more authentic this way - and now I am waiting to see Sony Ericssons next FW update, which will hopefully, fix the issue with the poor colours from the camera - ie Reds being painted a horrid pink colour and so on. |

@plankgatan
The Lens Cover is not made from very 'thin plastic' - it is in fact made from Glass!

yes of course...and that material is made IN VERY VERY THIN PLASTIC, AND WILL BREAK VERY VERY EASILY............
let say you have the phone in your pocket with some keys (or what so ever)...you fall or something else happends.... wwiiipps..the plastic breaks directley....
the glass dosent make your pics worse,(sure if you have tons of dust you have a problem...but if you have a clean glass is realy ok)...i also think that engineers have test this function some hundreds times, and figure out that it was ok
