Now, that’s what I'm talkin’ ’bout!!! That’s innovation! Sony Ericsson has just filed a patent on something very cool - underwater image capturing! The picture does look a bit weird, but I guess this would require the camera housing to be 100 percent sealed and not let anything in (like all the dust on the K850!). If they fail to do so, it will be a huge failure! Anyway, here’s the description from the patent and picture below

A housing may include a first portion that includes a window configured to allow a lens to capture images viewed through the window, and a first mating surface. The housing may include a second portion that includes a second mating surface adapted to mate with the first mating surface to form a watertight seal, at least one button to provide a signal to a terminal supported in the second portion, and a receiving surface on an inner surface of the second portion adapted to receive an insert, where the insert is adapted to be removeably coupled to the receiving surface on a first side and to receive the terminal via a second side.

Shouldn't any waterproof camera phone (including SE FOMA) be able to do this anyway? I remember reading a review of a waterproof CDMA phone on Verizon and the reviewer said it could take pictures underwater.

Why would anybody want to try to design let alone take a camera phone under water?

Sony Ericsson cant even design a camera phone that keeps dust out or works correctly 100% of the time let alone be water proof.

If I was under water the last thing on my mind would be trying to use a phone & if I really wanted to take pictures under water I would use one of the many proper under water cameras that are already available.

It'd be an interesting device to see go into production.. not saying I would buy it but there are some people I know that would go and buy it..

Plus would be creating an entire new market for customers with this device and that's going to boost their profits.

Though NOT a camfone, but - Olympus has already made this possible with their Digicams (forgot the model though . . .).

If this does happen . . . it will really take a loooot of TESTING to do, as you MUST also or CAN/MUST be able do the ff: underwater :

1. Send SMS/MMS

2. Navigate GPS (fo GPS-capable fones)

3. Listen to the RADIO/ play: music-files or even watch videos . . .

4. Make Calls [addsig]

So long as the phone can 'see' the satellite, it has a GPS lock..

s for listening to music... it's probably going to be crap. Unless it's going to be likeTHIS coming out of headphones and not the built in speaker.

A waterproof keypad wouldn't be too challenging, didn't use to make a waterproof device?

As for calls.. waterproofing of the mic. and speakers might be an issue..
