Hello everybody...!

I've read something about the so-called 'monitor mode' on GSM phones.

When turned on this mode should enable you to see the distance to the nearest base-station(s) etc. (and show you if there are any IMSI catchers in the vicinity)

Does anyone here know how to activate this mode on the SE 880i?

PS: if you know any 'secret codes', they are welcome too (if applicable). I do have the Nokia codes, but not for the current SE880i. (Except *#06# that is...) Surely there must be some more...?

Many thanks in advance!

PS: I found this already...

Getting your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) Number: *#06#
Access Software version: > * < < * < *
Reach last dialed numbers: 0 then #
The Sony Ericsson Secret Menu screen: -> * <- <- * <- *
Change to Default Language (English): < 0 0 0 0 >
Info about SIMLOCK: < * * <

But I'd still like to know very much about the 'monitor mode'.

I found it on this site, I didn't type it... But yeah, I guess -> = >

But anyways, main thing per topic was that I'd like to find out more about this so-called 'monitor mode'....

Anyone know how one can make this work on [image]http://static.esato.com/board/images/smiles/sonyericsson_logo.gif[/image] W880i?

TIA!

What exactly do you mean? There's no such thing as a monitor mode on W880.

It's supposed to be possible on all phones. Sometimes you need to download software to do this, but I can find only Sw and procedure for Nokia phones, hence my question.

To explain this further: with this mode you can monitor the network, local towers, distance to towers, see the tower ID, MNC, and determine which bands & channels are being used etc. And you can see whether there are any IMSI catchers around...

I found some comprehensive info on a German site and translated this for you:

The monitor mode is a normally deactivated part of the mobile phone-software, which indicates the parameters and the information that are necessary for the enterprise, but won't interest the "average user". This information is however very interesting for the specialist and the interested public.

Normally the manufacturer only provides the monitor mode at a surcharge - and select customers (GSM Providers). For some mobile phone types there is information and/or software on the InterNet to activate the monitor mode.

For example: the monitor mode indicates exact receipt level (rx) very accurate, whereas the "normal" reception bars are very inaccurate. Furthermore one can see to whom which transmitter belongs, and one can check out all kinds of useful information about the transmitters.

For the record: the monitor mode has no possibilities to do anything illegal.

Original:

You can try MyPhoneExplorer, but you won't succeed in making the phone display these infos.

Thanks anyway for your help!

Perhaps someone else knows how to do this, as the info is in the phone, you 'only' need to make it visible. It would be lame if it only works with Nokia and Siemens et al, and not for SE, right?

*585*0000#

Techmode.

Write this in Notepad :

Code:
<customization>

<network>
<techmode-enabled>true</techmode-enabled>
<techmode-passcode>0000</techmode-passcode>
<techmode-internetbutton>false</techmode-internetbutton>
</network>
</customization>

then Save as... -> customize_upgrade.xml

and put with XS or FAR in tpa\preset\custom

Thanks for your reply Centur!

But I hope you can elaborate a little bit: at the mo punching *585*0000# does nothing on my W880i - or is this the code to acces techmode/monitor mode after I install the customize_upgrade.xml file?

Also I'm not sure what you mean with XS or FAR?

Can you please explain a bit further? (pretend I'm a 4yo)

Thanks a million!
