What do the different "globe" icons mean? |

On the K790a and K550i, a globe appears when using WAP or MMS. Sometimes it's in color, sometimes it's in color and blinking, sometimes it's gray. The gray globe usually preceeds the infamous  "Communications Error" pop-up message.
The User's Guide for either phone has nothing on this.
What do these mean, exactly?

colour - Data connection active and connected (wap, gprs etc.)
colour and blinking - transmitting and / or receiving data
Grey - connection timed out, trying to reconnect
