I have a 2G Vodafone (Pay Monthly) SIM card in a 2G phone (the one that I received when I started the contract). I am being given an unlocked 3G Sony Ericsson phone, and as far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) I can put the 2G SIM in the 3G phone and use all 2G features.

However, does anyone know whether I can 'upgrade'(?) my 2G SIM with Vodafone to a 3G SIM for the new phone, and use the 3G features as well?

Also, does anyone know whether I am allowed to put the 2G SIM in the 3G phone? Are there any possible problems / rules against this? And would I be able to stay with my current contract if I was able to get a 3G SIM?

Thanks very much,
S

Yes, you can put a 2G SIM in a 3G capable phone and use all the available 2G features.

Yes, you can upgrade to a 3G SIM and use the available 3G features as well.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Just called Vodafone about it and the woman (although she didn't seem too sure of the whole thing) told me that by simply putting my 2G SIM into the 3G phone I will be able to use 3G services such as video calling "but slower". Is this true or does she not know what she's talking about?

Thanks again,

Suppose you're located in the UK ? I'm from NL and in my country Vodafone's 3G services are available to customers with a 2G simcard (when this is not too old), so maybe it's this way in the UK also ?
