K850i catastrophic failure. |

Hi All. Just wondered if anyone else has suffered a catastrophic failure of their K850i? Mine has just gone off for repair, it was few days outside the 28 day replacement period
Problem started yesterday when I tried to download a BBC podcast . All went OK and the download started. However, at about 2meg I decided enough was enough and hit the cancel button, which responded correctly. Then I tried to check my email but got the erorr message 'Unable to connect to server'. I noticed that the earth icon was flashing away at the top of the screen. Thinking the podcast was somehow still downloading I held the End button down in the hope it would exit the connection. Nothing happened for a few seconds then the phone switched itself off.
Oh dear thought I. I tried to switch the phone back on but there was no response. To cut a long story short I tried the holding the power button down in the following scenarios: with and without the SIM and memory card inserted; plugged into a car charger; plugged into a desktop charger. All to no avail. Finally I decided to try SEUS. Fired it up followed the instructions and plugged in the USB cable while holding down 'C'. Nothing. No even a ding from the PC. I also tried the battery from my wife's K850i, nothing. I also tried SEUS on my wife's phone and the service worked fine, so the PC and software is all OK.
Just thought you'd like to know as I've been reading about GDFS corruption problems with 'Operation Failed' messages and also resetting/switching off problems on the K850i. I wondered whether this might be a variation on that somehow with the firmware somehow becoming corrupted.

I'm not sure, but wouldn't holding down the end button for a time always switch the phone off? That used to be the way with SE phones - it's included as a kind of hard boot, for when things have gone awry. It definitely wouldn't have ended the GPRS connection either way.

Already tried SUES. The PC doesn't even recognise that the phone is plugged in! One other thing to note is that when I had it plugged into the chargers, after a few minutes the casing became very hot. I unplugged it and removed the battery which turned out to be much hotter than under normal charging conditions. Also there was no response from the phone when it was plugged into the chargers, no beep or icon displayed. I can only surmise that the phone firmware is not 'running' at all. |

Hi Boinng. I think you are correct for older SE models without a separate ON/OFF button. However the K850i does has a separate button, as do many of the later SE models. On my K610i I seem to recall holding down the back button or C button ended a data connection which is why I tried the End button on the K850i. |

I think the k850 initial firmware is catastrophic, not the phone itself |

I think is time for you to get a N95 8gig or a TYTN - or take your k-matter to the supreme court YOUR choice . . .

Anyway, even if it's a firmware problem, who cares?
I guess that everybody simply want their phones working fine and, considering what you lose in terms of money due to depreciation in a month or two, I would rather wait for another model to come out.
Rumors are that in a three/four months period we should get a 3x optical zoom/GPS enabled Cyber-shot phone, not to mention the recently introduced N82.
IMO the K850i doesn't represent a great leap forward compared to its predecessors, like my k800i.
