^^^ when avast detects a virus, it sounds an alarm (which makes you jump out of your seat ) as well as being imo very easy to use

Antivirus apps do not normally check web pages for threats whilst you surf. You need an 'Internet security suite' for that and I don't think there are any free ones.

Spybot search and destroy has the option to install and use it's 'Tea timer' background scanner which runs constantly and detects and prevents malicious programs and registry changes. This is free and does a similar thing to what you're after. Run it alongside AVG or AVAST and you should be ok

As Cyco said, Spybot is a superb app. It detects and removes some viruses my Norton IS 2008 doesn't!
