Hey. Just thought i'd share this with you lot because 1) I aint got nothing better to do and 2) Just wondering if anyone else had these experiences.
Anyway went to get a laptop today from PC world for my dad. No whilst i was playing with a iMac my dad was told he would need a Dual Core processor and they recommend 2gb of ram for his needs. Also he would need antivirus and that norton was the best (?).
Now the reason they come up with this decision was after they asked him some questions. One was do you want to do much gaming. Now my dad answered 'yes' because he loves that spider solitaire game. He said that its only for playing cards but the assistant insisted that a high powered graphics chip would be required. Obviously not i thought instantly but then he told my dad that he would also need the dual core prosser to support the internet and the Anti Virus that he hadn't even agree'd to buy
Obviously not true. Anyway I showed him a Advent for just under £400 which could do everything he wanted etc. But as for the kid he was completely talking out his a**e.
I can now see how my gran ended up with a sony vaio when she just wanted to store digital photos....
Oh and as for the tech guys they wanted £50 for a home install. £50 to plug in a few cables and enter someones name eh.
Just thought i'd share that anyway.
please comment.
Thanks

My mum recently bought £500 worth of PC from PC World. There's a very long story as to why she didn't get one from me which I won't bore you with here...
Anyway, the tech guy delivered it and plumbed it in but her virgin broadband package had not been activated yet so he couldn't get it online. Next day, after the virgin media activation date, she sticks the virgin media disk in and guess what? It reckons that her brand spanking new Vista pc does not have an ethernet connection!
So she calls PC World: "Sorry madam, you'll have to call virgin media"
So she calls Virgin Media: "Sorry madam, it's a fault with your computer. You'd better call PC world"
Took me five minutes to fix but isn't it marvelous?

Knobs...
I almost argued with one of the sales team at Mercedes Benz Direct... he was insisting on the projection headlamps on B200CDI being Xenon and I was literally telling him that they weren't.
He was called Dave xD

hmmmm yeah, the sales peep certainly work hard for their commission and the management don't seem to mind showing borderline misleading adverts on the telly.

When I bought my PC last year from PC World it came with Norton Anti Virus, even though at the time there were known compatibility issues with Norton and windows XP ie the computer would just hang instead of actually shutting down, and so I completely uninstalled Norton and used McAffee which I insisted PC World gave me for free!
That is after I explained that what they had done, was similar in effect to ford selling me a brand new petrol Focus with a free tank of Diesel!

My dad recons after i told him the guy was a tosspot that if you go to a car garage and theres a Ferrari or a Fiat the guy will try and sell you the Ferrari right?
I didn't understand it either
Anyway the laptop is very snazzy after we removed all the Advertising off it

Not sure about the Ferrari and Fiat analogy but my mum made the mistake of saying 'I'm willing to pay a maximum of £500".
They sold her a £439 PC and added bullshit extras like tech guy cover for five weeks or so, phone support for three days etc. to bump it up to exactly £500!

Jeesh Cyco. My gran was like that aswell. They asked her for a budget and she must have said something like aslong as its not too much im not bothered.
She got that tech guys stuff on another PC last year. They 'Serviced' the computer. Upon reading the list of things they did they performed a 'healthcheck' fixing 20-odd bugs. Funnily enough after the PC got back Zone Alarm, avast! and Spybot (all of which i installed) had been replaced by a pro gramme called 'Norton 360'. Strange eh ?

£30 for a stupid dip***t to stick a wee bit of ram into a slot
and then they take the liberty of servicing your pc (and they charge you)

I got asked if I wanted them to installa 1gb usb stick on my pc for £30. The stick was about £10. I said that I thought that I could handle plugging it into a usb slot.

£50 to install a PC is outrageous there easy to set-up yourself as they come with instructions.
When it comes to Eldary folk yes shops see them coming and try to get them to buy the most expensive product rather then the cheaper 1 bit like that Program on BBC "Rogue Traders"
I once went into my local PC World intending on buying the Full XP PC World actually told me not to buy it as it was expensive, they told me to contact ACER for my Missing reset disk which took months to come lol
in the end I had to buy a copy of eBay,
but PC World are not all cowboys, I applied for a Job with them didn't think i'd get but I was truely honest with them and couple months later I had a letter saying they would keep my details if any jobs were to arrise

It's the after sales service bit that I object to the most. If you've paid extra for technical support then you should get EFFECTIVE technical support, not some gimp telling you to ring virgin media.
This is her first ever computer, she's never even used a typewriter much before so the chances of her solving even simple problems over the phone are minimal.
Sure, it's not the tech guys job to show her how to use a PC but this WAS a technical problem in my eyes at least and she was under the impression that they would come out to her home for it. Apparently not...
