Why don't SE phones have a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a fastport?
It would make life a lot easier.
It would make a lot of sense, especially for the walkman branded phones.

They should have done that before. but now since lots of headsets integrates a 3.5mm jack, that's now an impossible dream to be standardized in phones as it may kill the sales for other SE 3.5mm enabled accessories not included in the phone package

I read "it comes down to economics" here ... I read "it comes down to econonics" there ...
phones are not cheap, so why does it come down to economics all the time if a feature is missing? |

Hi guys
Its not about "missing features" I think its more about wanting them to use thier products ONLY. I firmly believe SE (along with lots of other electronic companies i may add) want the consumer to buy into THIER brand.
To further increase revenue after the initial sale of a particular product or item, manufacturers tend to non-standardize thier accessories or in better words make it so thier accessories only work with thier product. Not all manufacturers are as bad as others at this, but unfortunately I think SE are one of the worse. Admittedly SE have been getting better lately (K850i with its two memory card formats).
An example (and remember it is only an example):
I want to upgrade my K600i to a later better model, K800i say.
Great i now have a better phone BUT my now spare SE K600i charger & SE car charger won't fit in my new k800i - solution buy a NEW spare SE k800i charger & a NEW SE car charger. more £ for SE!!!! Times this situation by thousands and you suddenly realise how profitable it is for manufacturers/companies to keep changing charging ports/memory card formats & not standardizing headphone jacks etc.
SE I believe have a VERY strong brand image (Sony in particular) which i think allows them to repeatedly get away with this trick & because people (particularly loyal brand consumers/fanboys etc) keep buying thier products regardless, they'll KEEP doing this.
I remember a few years back hearing people moan as SE utilised ANOTHER memory card format (memory stick pro-duo i believe) so soon after "standardizing" memory stick pro then there's the M2?.....or was that the micro M2?......no sorry M2 Duo........oh anyway you get the idea.
This accessory compatibility argument will run & run and probably only get worse as the integration between phone & pc gets better. |

Personally I would like to see a 3.5mm headphone socket and a mini-usb socket.

Sooner or later all manufactures will have a mini or micro USB port and a 2.5 or 3.5mm audio jack. Most devices will charge through USB. Give it a year or two. This will happen for protection of the enviroment and companies will have to follow some standards. In China from 2008 there is a law that all cell phones must have a USB port for charging. |

i think competition will pressure to include 3.5mm jack in tgheir phones. These phones are WALKMAN, and therefore should be music centric.

it's no conspiracy. Very few phone oem's produce 3.5mm sockets for audio. You'll notice that 2.5mm sockets are more common than 3.5mm. This is because a 3.5mm socket takes up a massive amount of space inside a phone that's already packed with gadgets.
It's just a space and cost saving measure. The exact same reason smaller and smaller memory cards are being brought out. Anyone who believes it's a conspiracy by oem's to make you buy more, try and imagine a phone with a compact flash memory socket. Or even try and explain a walkman cassette player with the original 1/4in headphone socket!
As devices get smaller, so to fo the accessories, it's only natural evolution.
