What format is the film? What program are you trying to watch it in?

Could it be a firmware upgrade needed on your drive.?

Sounds like a codec error to me.
Try here; http://www.avicodecpack.com
May sort the problem out, if not you've still got the latest codecs for AVI

I downloaded the latest codec pack from Divx yesterday so that aint the problem.
I have done a google search and it doesnt seem to be a codec for this.

Aaaaargh! Not this one, I hate this error!
Have you tried playing it in a different media player just as a test? Click start, run, type in mplayer2.exe and press return. This will load WMP 6.4 for you to try the movie with.
Other than that:
1. Check that WMP is set to use the correct audio output device (your sound card)
2. Reinstall your sound and chipset drivers
3. Update Direct X if it'll let you.
4. If it's XP, run a system file check (start, run, type in sfc /scannow. You'll need an XP disk but it won't wipe anything off like a reinstall)
5. System restore? If all else fails it might be worth a try.
