I need some help please - I have just bought a new LCD TV and am trying to get my head around the whole HD thing and it is driving me nuts.

So my LCD TV is a Samsung LE40R87BDX - which has a resolution of 1366 x 768 making it 720p (correct?). So my TV will look it's absolute best if supplied with a 720p signal - look good but not quite as good with a 1080i or 1080p signal (as my tv will have to down-scale the image) and look ok with any form of SD (standard definition) signal. If I have made mistakes already then please do correct me!

Now my xbox 360 doesn't have a HDMI output it only has composite (or the aditional VGA lead that can be purchased) so what quality / resolution does the 360 give out? Is there any point getting the 360 HD DVD drive if I can't get a proper HD signal to the TV due to the lack of connection options (I am not forking out for a 360 elite just 6 months after getting my xbox - damn you microsoft) Or have I got it all wrong entirely and the signal transmitted through component or VGA leads is as good / only marginally poorer than those through a HD lead ?!?!

Please help - very confused! (and this is without going into HDMI 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.3a etc etc)

Thanks,
Tom

Your Xbox 360 and Sammy will be in optimal output if you set your 360 to output at 1080i via the supplied cable that comes with a premium 360 - component 6 cables (Setting can be changed on your 360 dashboard).

Have a look at www.avforums.com, they are really good at providing optimal settings for SD and HD sources.

Sorry i couldnt be of any more help

you connect your xbox to your lcd screen using the component cable you got with your premiuim pack.
the lcd has component sockets on it they should look like audio inputs but blue green and red (i think).
then in your xbox menus set the xbox to output via the component if it does nt auto detect.
it should then but displaying in hd you ll know if it is as you see a jump in pic quality.
if you buy the hd drive it ll play in hd if the disc is a hd disc.

Thanks for the replies - @T68iKing are you sure 1080i and not 720, could you explain why this will be better as the resolution of my LCD is not 'full' HD (1080).

Here you go mate:

Everything you need to know about your LCD Have a good ol' read, LCD are always a tricky issue to explain

You can always try 1080i and 720p, and go with whichever you'd prefer. I know for sure that it'll accept 1080i - its what i run my sammy on

1080p is only possible with an HDMI cable and resolution of 1920*1080
