I keep getting the above message appear is red letters....
must be an issue with the phpbb mysql...

Yes, I get that on occasion, on different PCs too, including here at work!
It's normally after I've left the PC alone for a short while. It usually also says 'new pm!' at the end of this message too, even though there usually isn't one!

I've seen it a couple of times and think its related to the new code that checks for PMs and reports any new ones on the page you are currently viewing (without a refresh).
My guess was that it had some sort of database access issue while checking the PM tables
I haven't remembered to make a screen capture yet though so first one to do so will certainly help I'm sure

Although I have been on the receiving end of that error a few times, I think the way the PM System now works is Brilliant!

@masseur, speak of the devil, I just got the error. It's not the first time, though it's a small price to pay for the new PM alert feature. Here's the screenshot I took:
