greenfalcon Joined: Oct 15, 2007 Posts: 8 From: California, USA PM |
I live in California and love the look, design, and the photo capabilities of the K850i, I have had an S710(a) since it came out and it is time to upgrade. I accidentally took the S710 with me scuba diving so I am now using an old 610 i think... anyway my question is, if i buy an unlocked phone who would i call for service... would i ship it to sony ericcson or am i up the creek?
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the site
if your planning on Buying a K850i from another country I think if you run into problems then they wont be able to fix, your better off waiting for the US release and getting something else in the meantime.
however if the K850i is actually available to you over there then all you need to do is buy it from a store if any probs take it back and let them do all the fixing what I mean is they will send it to there local repair centre or thats how it works here in the UK im assuming it's the same in the US

Thanks for the reply, well I guess i will have to see if the phone gets "released" in the states, the Sony Ericsson US site shows it as released but it is not available anywhere. Stinks living in a place where we get the cool phones last
Thanks again,

Just a suggestion why dont you contact the US team and ask them when they will stock it im sure they will be very happy to acknowledge you more
you can also pop by your cellphone stores and see what they say aswell,
the phones only been available here since late last month lol

Do you really really want a K850I with all the problems that are being reported about it? |

The US Team don't know $#!+. All they know is that the phone is realeased and a 5 year old kid that can browse the internet will tell you that the phone is realeased looking at the website! They have no clue where you could buy one or how much it would cost or which service provider will carry the phone. They will ask you to contact Sony Style and Sony Style would send you back to SE and the cycle is never ending! They suck! |

Thanks again,
I bought mine from a local guy who imported the Indonesian version. He offers 90 day warranty with him and mentioned that SE would cover it for a year which I am uncertain of. I live in the US and I have bought 5 phones over the past few years from internet sellers that import them from overseas before the phones are released/available in the US, 3 of which are SE's and the last of them is my K850i. I have had good luck in the past and I have also heard of people whose phones have died and couldn't get them replaced under warranty. It is just about how comfortable you are but the safest way would be to wait and buy it when it is officially available in the US to have your warranty come into play when needed! |

Thats pretty low service then,
atleast they help you over here but then we have a wider range of handsets, the iPhone is a US seller so it would be intresting to see how the warranty goes about if you have a boxed US version imported.
However thought the iPhone is available here anyway next month on 02 lol
Just wait and hope the K850i arrives over there for you guys btw Goodluck

Exactly! I'm thinking they may have given exclusivity to one of the carriers (rumors say AT&T for Thanksgiving) and they do not want to sell the phone until AT&T releases it. Kinda like how the iPhone was released. |

Exclusivity may be possible for AT&T but not for too long ... then again most other carriers cannot use it even though their GSM network based (Tmobile USA does not use any existing 3G band - their special they'll use 1700 & 2100 North American bands, the 2100 is NOT the same range that Europe uses). Also other carriers cannot afford to use it like WEST or others.
Rogers Wireless here in Canada is rumored also to carry this phone. |

Well the K850 is now on Amazon.com, which I guess counts as it being available in the US...
EDIT: It's sort of available: Only two units available. Looks really shady and unofficial for Amazon.

SE has never had phone launches from retailers on time...only through grey market. Expect it to be at SonyStyle around Christmas time for an exorbitantly over-market price (will probably be ~650 USD while the market will be pulling in the low to mid 400s).
Look for a trusty grey market dealer that offers 1 year warranty plans. Might want to wait a few more weeks. Besides, you'll save huge amounts of money. This phone's market value will deperciate rapidly |
