My age old desktop has decided to go and screw up... again.

I'm going to restore it, fresh install of XP after a format so I'm going to back all my stuff up.

BUT

it's not having any new USB devices. I borrowed a ext. HDD of a mate but it tells me it cannot install it and I'm pretty screwed...

Can anyone help me on this..?

Urgent help needed. (Come on Cyco )

Thanks, Arien.

Uninstall the USB hub(s) in device manager then restart and let it reinstall them?

Create a new user and try installing the hard drive again?

Is it a USB caddy with a hard drive in it or one of those all-in-one things that require their own drivers? If it's a 3 1/2 hard drive in a caddy, take the bloody thing out and install it internally!

Its an all in one WD drive.
The case measures 20cm long and 11.5cm wide.

Don't think my friend would appreciate me taking it apart though.

So should I try a new user account?

EDIT:

I am online, just doesnt sign in...

Might as well, it sometimes works.

Or try sfc /scannow from the 'run' command to restore system files. If all fails fails, I'd try a repair reinstall from the XP disk. Even if it won't boot afterwards, your stuff will still be on the hard drive and can be fished off with a caddy.

Ok, I'm going to try creating a new user account.

But if I do repair/reinstall the XP files, is there a chance of me losing my music, (irreplacable) photos and other things?

Would it be better if I just payed the Tech Guys at PC World to do it?

A repair reinstall does not format the drive or remove your personal files but it is better to back your stuff up first so yes, take it to the tech guys to be on the safe side

Yaha, I'll do that.

Can't run the risk of losing my stuff.

Cheers Cyco.
