Yes, its true. In the S60 touch topic some of our experienced users suggested Nokia has been developing the idea for a long time so its impossible for them to be inspired by the iPhone or any other company for that matter.
Well, have a look here:

the article i posted is only 4 months old where nokia specifically states they have no plan to use touch screen and will ONLY use them if they see demand. So obviously the demand they saw was from the iPhone.

This has been supported by the fact that the nokia's TS proto shown on Smartphone Show has it's GUI as moving the same as the iphone.

on the other hand... what companies say publicly and what they do privately are not neccessarily the same thing.
clearly there is some commercial reasons to keep things under wrap until they are ready to announce them
so I wouldn't exactly call this "proof" as such...

@QVGA: NOKIA stated they would not release TS-interface units unless they saw a demand.
Now Nokia sees a demand, and do just what the company said it would do - release a TS-interface.
Lets not make more of the iPhone than what it is. |

@QVGA,
As pointed out obviously at that time they were still keeping there plans quite, i simply do not accept that the S60 Touch UI has just been a reaction to Apple and advanced so far in such short time frame. But if it is true WOW that really is impressive as a reaction speed to changing market.
@razec
That was not a Nokia device it is just a proof of concept device for S60, no one outside of Nokia yet knows what the devices will look like other than at least one will have a full qwerty as Nokia have told us this.
Also lets not forget that this does fit in with their OVI vision for the future which includes a richer Internet and Media experience. Also advances in touch screen, processor, graphics along with greatly improved Data speeds all also mean now may be the right time.
Whatever the reason it means that those that want touchscreens gain another player and more choice.

Maybe this got Nokia thinking about producing their own touchscreen devices.
