Hi,
I'm currently making a new P1 theme in preparation for when my phone comes. I am looking at the softkeys images, and the theme creator says they are 240x112 and 240x84, but the preview is much thinner; just the buttons. As I don't have the phone yet, I can't really test it! Do they sometimes get bigger? Or should I make the bigger images just fit around the buttons as best as?

Thx

James

Thanks for the reply - I can see the sizes, but they don't seem to really make sense when looking at the preview. If you have the theme creator installed, start a new P1 theme and go to the "App Launcher" tab. There are two images that can be used for the softkeys, titled Horizontal Backgrounds and Horizontal Background Frames. The sizes are as in my first post, but the actual softkey buttons are more like 240 x 30 or so... I don't understand why the images it wants are much "taller" vertically, and it makes it hard to place a "button" shape randomly in the middle of a taller bitmap so it fits right! What I was wondering is if sometimes those buttons (the softkeys) are displayed taller and that's why the bitmaps need to be bigger?

The pdf from the SE Dev site doesn't really list anything asides from the images sizes.

OK - just found this...
http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/w[....]emes/UTZ_File_Format#SoftKeys:
seems to look like the image should contain "rows" for each button pressed or not? Seems to make a little more sense and is a better explanation than SE's own doc! I don't quite get why it's relevant as the P1 doesn't have a flip though?! And the "frames" version is still something different... !

yes. the image does contain rows for each button pressed. for the main background image of 240x112 each row is supposed to be 240x28. the top row is for left softkey pressed, the 2nd row is for middle softkey pressed, the 3rd row for right softkey pressed and the last row is for no softkeys pressed(default state). the frames are supposed to be 3 rows with the same 240x28 dimension but with frames for each of the softkey when it is not pressed. most themers don't use frames and just use a blank transparent image instead since it is much more easier and the themes look better without any frames. hope this helped

Well the way the images for the soft keys are implemented is indeed a bit confusing. The "frames" image is a image that will be displayed on top of the background of your soft keys. It is organized as a 3x3 grid (one row less than the background). The result of the background and the frame will be displayed when the button is not pressed. When a button is pressed the frame image "disappears" and you'll only see the background. So if the frame image is a semi-transparent image with some shadow effect, the softkeys will have some 3d effect. If the key is pressed the button will appear flat.

Also you only have to draw one button per row (in the aqua 990 example on the wiki the red buttons) and leave the rest transparent. I even believe that when you don't do this you'll only see the last button on your phone, because every row will be drawn on top of each other for every button. Therfore it really beats me why this grid organization is used.

Another tip when designing a uiq3 theme: really use the image dimensions as specified in the Theme Editor. Although the editor will accept images of other sizes, your phone will not.

@roelkok: thanks for the correction about the frames mate i always thought the frames were used under the softkeys when the softkeys were pressed

Thanks for clearing that up - all makes sense I guess (although it is definitely more confusing than the "traditional" SE Themes I have done in the past! Also explains why the "back" button was a weird size compared to the actual image shown in the preview too
