Lol I was just about to start this very topic!
My first question is, can you connect the MZ-E909 to the computer vis USB (or any other method) and chuck your MP3s over to the Minidisc in the player that way? And does it take a standard mini-USB connection or is it a proprietary connector? I already have the latest version of Sonicstage so can use that

simple answer is no matey..
the E909 is just a player.. so you need to record the discs elsewhere..
with a proper netmd you can do that as you say.. I could so it but it doesn't work on macs!!
the new HI-MD does work with macs but as i said waiting on a deck before I just ship..
MDLP is good enough for the time being..

Damn, in that case I have no way of recording to disks then! That's a shame, will probably have to stick it on Ebay and resell it, though will be after at HI-MD though in the meantime!

if it's fully boxed I may take it off you..
the players are always a lot smaller than the recorders....

Sadly I don't think it's boxed, it's described as having a few scratches on it though doesn't look too bad on the picture. Also it doesn't come with all it's accessories
Shame I won't be able to make much use of it, looks like a dinky little thing!

oh, it is dinky..
it'll not be much bigger than a single MD...
teeny weeny thing, esp to have a proper DAC in there..
I really don't know how Mp3 has beaten it.. Hi-MD with it's drag and drop facility to PC and MAC is so much better than Mp3 and you can record on Hi-MD in wav format and upload that straight to PC or MAC...
hence my comment about bootlegging concerts
I somewhere have Linkin Park and Green Day bootleg concerts from gigs me and my MD recorder have attended! hehe..
I'll just make this point clear..
bootlegging is not illegal as artists can not copyright protect live music, it's usually the venues that don't allow you to record it... but that's their choice...

I've heard from a few people and places that the MD has much better sound quality than MP3 players, I'm scouring Ebay for Hi-MD players as we speak! I think you can 'bookmark' where you are on a disc or track too, which will be very handy for talking books!
btw has anyone got any spare Minidiscs they could send me, as this one will come with none whatsoever! I'm probably been cheeky here but if anyone has any they could send for free that they have spare and knocking about somewhere...

I hear the ATRAC Encoding that MD`s use is much better than .mp3 encoding.

depends what you define as "better". If you don't use LP modes I'd say it's fine. Personally I never liked the ATRAC encoding, to me MP3 and AAC are "warmer".
But that's a very subjective view.
But atleast now you can record at reasonable bitrates, rather than the old Atrac3 which only supported 132Kbps max.
this Sony quote from wiki "Sony's official claim is that ATRAC3plus at 48 kbit/s rate provides a quality comparable to MP3 at 128 kbit/s, which would place this codec in the same league as AACplus, mp3PRO and Windows Media Audio" I am very very sceptical about. There is no way in my view that 48Kbps atrac3plus is as good as MP3 128Kbps or AAC 96Kbps. At 48Kbps atrac lacks serious depth and warmth, and sounds like tinned music. But then again 128MP3 is also pretty crap once you've listened to 256 or higher for a while.

I'm planning to use MP3s on it a fairly high bitrates, 192 bit minimum, which is great as it'll be expandable with my music collection, I'll just keep buying Hi-MDs! And no need to worry about running out of space, though the only downside is of course that I can't shuffle all my music as I would on my 30Gb iPod Video, though I guess I could throw all my MDs in the air and pick them up in a random order
Speaking of which, just got a great bargain off Ebay, the MZ-NH700 Hi-MD player for £22.49 delivered! They normally go for £60-odd on Ebay - though I might have to get a few accessories for it, only the unit, charger and cloth carry pouch were pictured but still an excellent deal.

Just been reading around and it sounds like I might have trouble using my MP3s on the MD, looks like it might have to convert them to their own ATRAC format, though I have a feeling when I had my Sony MP3 player it did a similar thing with that - I still have that version of SonicStage on my PC, I presume that will work with the Hi-MD unit too?

oh bloody hell! the R90.. that was my 2nd ever MD player.. on about my 5th now..
gets used a hell of a lot more than my iPod does..
in relation to what choons to play sammy, just rewind back to when you had a CD player and what CDs you used to take.. or make your own mix
