Hi everyone.

I just found VoIP SIP client for UIQ3 devices at http://www.symbiangear.com/pl[....]uZQ%3D%3D&p_version=MS4yLjI%3D

Is there anybody who tested Optimobile UniPhone 1.2.2 already?

Thanks

Hi,
What's wrong with my question, guys? No one is interested here in VoIP on P990/P1? I can't believe it. Yes, we all have fring at our mercy, but it's not a natural Skype/SIP client, just gateway to the service. Still good enough, since it's free, but definitely not perfect. And now, when we can buy with just few clicks a long awaited product, first mentioned by SE well in 2006, it suddenly became unwanted?
OK, it's not a big deal to throw away 25 euros without any advice from aside, it doesn't make too big hole in a pocket. But it also certainly is not stupid to ask someone who already bought Optimobile UniPhone, since it's available at symbiangear for more than a week, and maybe knows exactly it's good only on paper. Moreover, there is a 100/1 chance that SE will include this program for free in the next P1's firmware. Make me sure it never happens, and I'll go ahead at symbiangear

I dont really see the point. As far as I can tell, its not really supporting anything that fring doesnt(though I havent really used it much)
And fring has more features as well, so why spend money on something when you can have a better product for free?

Actually I am very interested in this program too. However I have been very busy moving lately so I have not had any time to play around with my phone. Anyway, originally I was under the impression that this program would be supplied for free by SE. Is that not the case?

I hope so. But in P1's white paper Optimobile client is mentioned in third party applications section, where only a few of apps are delivered to us by SE for free

I could never get Fring to work despite the latest version of Firmware etc. I was looking forward to a quality paid for product. I purchased and downloaded UniPhone today. Unfortunately it downloads and installs OK but crashed immediately on loading. My researches re Fring led me to the conclusion that it had something to do with the O2 branding on my phone. Have any O2 (UK) customers successfully got either UniPhone or Fring working on P1i?

I bought the software and here's my comments:

Pros
+ Works! (Fring always crashed on memory)
+ A lot of helpful settings, like blocking/allowing certain access modes (wireless, UMTS etc.) with the software
+ Easy to set up ypur favourite SIP account
+ Multiple SIP account
+ Good audio quality
+ Support on BT headsets (even if stated different!)
+ Integrates (better: read out) address book

Cons
- Very hardware hungry, severe drops out if you try to switch to or use other apps!
- No clipboard support to insert phone numbers
- Crashes on address books wth a lot of(?) entries (mine has ~ 1100 and keeps crashing the app, out of memory)
- Sometimes dodgy quality (might be my WLAN though...)
- Very expensive (~25 EUR)

For me I'm close to return the software since loading contacts trashes the app and there's no clipboard support to insert phone numbers. So you are back to pen and paper here!

Hi,

I have used the OptiMobile UniPhone for a months now and with the latest release 1.2.2 is the best mobile VoIP product in the market today. It was little problem in the beginning but the first version of P1 version was more the reason (bad WiFi drivers etc).

I test a lot of different Dual Mode phones (both GSM/3G and WiFi with VoIP SIP client) include Nokia E65, E61i, E90 and now also SonyEricsson P1 with OptiMobile UniPhone client.

If you compare SonyEricsson P1 with Nokias phones:
+ Uniphone has much better sound quality
+ Even with bad networks with lot of latency and jitter it is good quality
+ When I talk with OptiMobile they told me that next release also will support seamless handover between WiFi and Cellular networks. This could not any Nokia phone handle today
+ The WiFi and SIP setting is much more simplier to do in the UniPhone client
+ Great to have several SIP account and connect to different WiFi AP. I have set up one account for Home and one for Enterprise. In my home I call out thry my VoIP operator and in the Enterprise I call all my call thru our SIP based PBX system.
+ Compare with Fring OptiMobile Uniphone is working. According to OptiMobile website http://www.optimobile.se they has developed this VoIP client together with SonyEricsson. The most others vendors has try to design a own client without any cooperation. This is very difficult to success with this advance software.
+ In the Swedish Magazine Mobil http://www.mobil.se/programtips_visa.asp?pId=500 the OptiMobile UniPhone get 8 of 10 points in the last test recomend buy. And finally how could you say that a software for 25€ is expoensive. In my last trip to Australia I saved 2€/minutes for all my call home to Sweden with this software compare with a call over the cellular operators network. The payback time was 13 minutes!

@jsheerin

Shouldn't have much to do with the O2 branding on your phone, though branding does cause problems, Rogers in Canada has a lot of DRM audio disabling features added, Orange and Vodaphone disable VOIP functionality on their mobile handsets, but last I heard, O2 was the 'good guy'. Do a search on Google, or unlock and unbrand your phone.

Hi all,

Actually this has all been discussed in this thread also

http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php? topic=151872&start=15#post2155039

Sorry but call me cynical but Mr VoWLAN joined made two posts telling us how terrible Fring is and how wonderful Optimobile is and disappeared looks to me like he has a vested interest in Optimobile. I have experienced none of the issues he describes with Fring with no need to set up WiFi but i don't use a SIP client i use Skype so FRING is definitely best for me over many months now on various devices and of course still free.

..whatever the motivation - it's "new technology" (bleh), as they say.. And you probably will get a bit more support with Optimobile than Fring, after all.

@Nipsen,

But it doesn't support Skype and most people i know use Skype not services that use SIP which can be complicated to set up, and if paying 25 Euros you are entitled to get support. Which by the way Fring also offers even though it's free and their responses whilst not immediate are still quite quick in my experience less than 24hrs.

Well, at least you can shout over the phone at people who have to listen no matter what.

Anyway...doesn't Fring support SIP as well, now?

The once or twice I've tried fring it refused to work as the SIP server I wanted to connect to didn't have an internet wide DNS name, internal only stuff.

Why on earth the fring service wanted to talk directly to the server I don't quite know.

I don't know much about the OptiMobile client, but I would hope it integrates slightly better than fring does for making calls anyway. It would be good if it was properly integrated by SE, i.e contacts could have SIP extensions etc so you wouldn't even need a desk phone, the mobile could do it all. Maybe one day..
