I just read in a Sony Ericsson press release that 900 songs can be fit onto a 1GB Memory Stick. Under what circumstances is this possible, and would the quality of the files be decent? |

Sony ATRAC probably?
They are very compressed files. Sound quality isn't that bad.
I don't know if phones can play OGG files, these are also very compressed.

I use Media Coder to convert my Mp3s to M4a before using in my phone. They are compressed good, while having the same quality as they had before converting

It's when using eAAC+ codec around 32 - 48 kbps. Sound quality is very good for the file size. But the bas level is a bit low.

I doubt it, thats a little over 1mb per song. An average 3 minute length MP3 is 3-4mb (depending on bitrate, etc.) |

my phone has no expandable memory, but with only 28mb I can still fit around 15 to 20 songs on there with compression! 64 bitrate |
