briefly...
a few days ago i changed the attributes of a few important files by checking the "encrypt content to secure data option"...
the user account which i was using that time got somehow deleted and a virus overcame the system subsequently...
i had to format the c and d drives to install xp again...
the files are on drive e but they are not giving access to me not even when i login as administrator!!!
pls help me out...
i need to get the files back!!!

Disable simple file sharing, log in as administrator in safe mode, right click on the protected folder, click properties.
I can't remember exactly where it is, but there should be a facility for you on one of the tabs (you may have to click an 'advanced' button) to take ownership of the folder.
This only works under certain circumstances so best of luck! Normally, you will have to have saved the encryption key and certificate to decrypt the folder but it all depends on exactly how XP encrypted it.
Sorry I can't be more specific, it's been ages since I've done this. Do a Google for 'XP take ownership' or 'xp decrypt folder' for better explanations.
There's a linux boot disk that can read encrypted files on NTFS volumes if I remember correctly, might be worth a Google for that too.

Ab aya unth phaad ke niche
So now wots the exact prb u r facing ? i didnt got this from ur qs? still if you can login with any user account then in run type "control userpasswords2"
a windows will prompted jst change the passwrd for admin here n main thinf you dont have to feed old pass if this thing will not work coz if your user has very low privileges then boot ur system from dos (from 98 fdisk)
go to c(windows part.) windows>> systyem32>>config>> n delete sam file now boot ur windows from xp bootable cd n "REPAIR" previous instalation (it s the best option for you) rememeber dont think to delelte sam if u r nopt going to repair ur window!!
also try this from xp msdos
net user [your username] [new password]
or this cool one>>
To reset ur adminstartor password to a new account type
"net user administrator (or the account name for which u wana change password) /random"
and press enter and u'll get a random reseted password without knowing old 1. jst remember it and have hacking

@hac...
see i have some files in e drive to which i checked the "encrypt contents to secure data" option in file properties>>advanced...
now i've reinstalled xp and c/d drives have been formatted...
now the files which are still on e drive don't give access to me not even in the administrator account...
they show that they can be accessed by a particular user which was deleted alongwith the earlier xp...
since that user (with those particular credentials and some user certificate thumbprint) can only access that file transparently...
hope i've made it clear enough!!!

yeh now its clear to me n dude delete that all things coz xp uses strong encryption method similr t0 RSA for EFS n no other user and operating system can decrypt that so easily,, unless u rememberd the exact login credential of that user with previlege level given to him???
I also faced this with some PRECIOUS CLIPS!!! ?? May be u'll find any decyption tool on net ??
search "windows xp + encyption + decrypt +utility or software"
