The funny thing though is that one still cannot buy one unless they get a contract with it so essentially even moving it around either for sale or use with another company leaves someone with an ATT contract.
Being unlocked does not bring too many benefits yet.

You can buy it without a contract, you can even get it on Pay as you go...so no just fork the £300 for an 8Gb and there u go you done. Just wait for a free unlock solution of you tight on cash..I am sure its not far off.

Hi all,
Even if you buy one with an At&T contract you have 14 days in which you can cancel the contract which is why so many are now becoming available for sale. As these are not subsidised by having a contract they are bought and paid for separately unlike here where if you cancel the contract you have to return the phone and get a refund. If you cancel your AT&T contract and do return the iPhone your are charged a restocking fee.
It does seem in a very short period of time what was meant to have been a fully locked down device has been cracked wide open their appears to be very little that can't be done with the iPhone already. The only thing left to see is if Apple try and close any of these massive loopholes with further Firmware updates. But from what i have read most people won't upgrade until it is confirmed all the hacks still work. I was always lead to believe that Mac OS so was much more secure than anything else it appears that may not be the case after all.
Marc

It was only after the iPhone came out that we learned that the Mac Os is not as secure as we all thought it to be. Apparently because Mac are so few and far between hackers and virus writers have concentrated on the bigger picture which is the Windows OS.
Ironically the iPhone might lead to more hacks and security flaws on the Mac OS being expsed.
Guys also two types of unlocking was done this week. The one on Engadgets.com and the other by a New Jersey teen who used a physical reworking of the phone. The NJ teens solution is irreversible so we have to wait and see about the Engadget unlock since it is software based and Apple might be able to develop a go around for it. Lets hope they can keep those phones unlocked.
What now of the EU phone companies who might have entered into agreements withs Apple to sell phones later this year? Are they still going to want to sell them at those hefty prices knowing that there are unlocking solutions?

As much as all these things have been said, I dont believe that anything created or made by man is impenatratable, it can be a steel house, iphone and many more other things. My main concern here is that upon unlocking these device, how much saftey, reliability and durability are you being guaranteed of now.

Legal threats halt iPhone crack (BBC article)
A British firm's plan to sell software that could open the iPhone to non-US networks has been put on hold following legal threats from AT&T lawyers

guys...you walk into an apple store and buy and iphone.. no contract no nothing... what happens is when you activate it via itunes it'll try to hook you up on a 2 year with at&t..
if you buy it to use it unlocked.. you'd never activate it through itunes and at&t so there is no contract for you.
of course to activate the iphone you have to use a itunes "hack" and then unlock with the available software once it comes out..
uniquephone.com or whatever.. i think they're a fraud... what happened was the iphonesimfree group unlocked engagdets iphone so to make sure this group wasn't going to get all the publicity these guys made up some lame lawyer story.
lol that hotz kid that unlocked it with hardware and software modding.. apple and at&t didn't even blink an eye.
as for max osx being the most secure... lol that's a steve thing.. everything can be hacked just depends on the desire to do so...lol the apple tv was hacked to run full osx the first week it came out..
