Well, having had a K800 for a short while, but having actually preferred the look of the K810 (couldn't get it for another 3 months here so I went with K800) I am wondering if it's possible to swap the original housing for a K810 housing.

The phones have similar dimensions, and the same key placements.

Here's comparison pics of both:

The only major difference is that the K810 has a much slimmer shutter than the K800, but from the looks of this picture it's just the K800 housing design, not the chasis itself that protrudes. I'm hopeful the cases will be interchangeable:

afaik its not possible, cos the device sizes are different, even not that seriously. imo se did it on purpose, cos otherwise everybody would have changed the covers and didnt go for k810... but thats just my thought

Someone on Howard Forums did it a month or two ago now....

Someone on HERE(can't remember who) also managed to put K790 into a K810 shell.......I just don't have the link to hand, sorry!

But it can be done.....

the sizes are different by only 1mm length and breadth, it's only the height that is largely different (22mm:17mm), which I suspect is due to the very different lense cover design. I think it's unlikely there will be any difference in height of the chasis itself.

All buttons, speakers, etc are in the same locations.

I take your point, but I'm still hopeful

EDIT: @aware, Cool! Excellent, just what I was hoping. Good old "design recycling"! Now, I wonder about firmware?

you can upgrade the k800i to a k810i at wotanserver with a slight keypad backlight issue

oops, on further reading at howard forums, you need parts off the K810 to swap the housing, so it's more than just a housing swap.

From what I can gather it's the keyboard and housing not just the housing.

Still if that's all it's worth buying the necessary parts. (considering I was too impatient to just wait for the real thing!)

you need the housing...PCB and you gotta do soem trimming

"the lcd plastic is thinner"

you can use the k810is LCD but if you dont mind trimming the plastic your originla one will work fine....the hard part is finding the housing

keyboard=pcb I meant (not keyboard = keypad)

Yep it looks like a relatively easy mod so I'm excited. I know a store that will be able to get me a housing and pcb (they can get any part for any mobile phone they stock or repair).

@gaming guy, yep I knew there was some issue but couldn't remember what. Backlight, hmm, if it doesn't come on at all, then that would deter me from upgrading the firmware.

nah, not worth it then. The small improvements in K810 hardly seem worthwhile for loss of keypad lights.

When I said "keyboard" I was referring to the pcb that is needed for the mod (actually, the mainboard is also a pcb, so I used the correct term, which is keyboard - to differentiate from the mainboard) It's a keyboard because it has the micro switches for the keys on it.

The KEYPAD on the other hand is the plastic bit with the numbers on it. Where I buy my housings from the keypad is included, so what I'm saying is I need the keyboard (what you call pcb), and the housing (which includes the keypad and buttons).

Nothing else.

The keyboard will cost max. $30, the housing will cost max. $60, so all up the mod will cost $90 or less. So it's affordable compared to the loss of selling my K800 and buying an actual K810.

Yes, is posible

look here:
http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-k800i-k810i-upgrade-p-2181.html

They have the necessary stuff to mod our K800
I've seen people modding their K790 (american version of K800) into K810.
