Never owned a Symbian or Windows Mobile phone...

Always liked the idea of the P Series, but didn't like the lack of a 5-way D-pad (didn't like the jog dial much).

Then came the P990 and I thought that my prayers have been answered...

When the price became resonable, it turned out to be an extremly buggy phone...

Now the P1i is out (in some places). Supposedly it solves the P990's lack of memory problem...

Yes... this doesn't have a 5-way d pad and all..

Anyway, P1i or Touch?

Windows is always better. Go for the HTC Touch.

Can you elaborate a bit on how Windows is better?

I totally disagree...

I found Windows Mobile the buggiest, stupidest system on the market. I owned 2 devices, Imate Jam and TyTn...both of which sold at very high $$$. I found them crap compared to UIQ, even with its bugs.

I don't get how people complain about UIQ's multitasking capabilities and then recommend windows. WM's memory management is far worse. Not to mention and the glacial speed and poooor battery life.

I'd pick the P1i over any WM smartphone.

not to mention the call qualities? although this point has been discussed countless times before. remember, you're buying a phone first, a PDA second. which is more important?

if you ask such question here on esato people will advise for p1i. i have p990 and fujitsu siemens pocket loox n560 running windows mobile 5.i think that my pda is way way better than my p990. but than is a device at 624 mhz compared to 201 mhz of the p990.
i would go for htc touch anytime.
my pda gives me 31 mb of ram free out of 64.what p990 can't.

htc touch and p990 both have 64mb of ram. im wondering whether the htc touch , with its touchflo, can still give you ram higher than the 16mb left with p990i. who uses the touch? is it really slow? does the touch also have memory issues?

So you're saying SE has better call qualities?

Well again, the P1i should've solved the memory problem, that's what people are claiming...

I remember reading that masseur used to like his Tytn... Can more people who have used both WM and UIQ comment on their expereinces?

@saab rider

there's been some comparison between symbian call quality and WM call quality. i would think that symbian has noticeably better call quality, but that is of course just an opinion.

it depends on what u need because i feel that u are comparing 2 from different levels i see the touch as low-end wm6 phone and the p1 as a high-end symbian phone
anyway, the only way FOR you to know is to try both of them before buying ..

but here are some highlights .

P1i
- is more expensive at moment
- regular touchscreen
- better camera 3.2mp with auto focus
- 3g
- 128mb ram u will get around 70 mb free
- bigger but with a keyboard
- better screen at 262k but smaller at 2.6in
- wifi b only
- m2 memory stick
- today screen is very basic and so far there is no support for plugins
- less application and games available

HTC touch
around 200$ difference
- ofcourse the touchFLO screen
- 2 mp camera no auto focus
- no 3g
- 64 ram usually u will get around 25-30 mb free (not sure about that) but at least it doesn't suffer from memory leaks like the p990i
- 65k color screen bigger at 2.8
- no keyboard
- wifi b/g
- micro sd cards
- you can find whatever application or game u want

summery
if you want more multimedia capabilities go for the p1 if you want more of a PDA function and loads of application go for the HTC touch
but you have to try both because WM UI doesn't appeal to everyone

Been using both platforms, let me tell you that Symbian is far more polished, more stable.

also the battery issues of WM prevent any WM powered phone to be a work horse for a daily basis, just simple, you have to plug every day.

I'm using a P990i and with the last firmware is way better than my previous Cingular 8125.
Also Bluetooth, Wifi are better on Symbian, don't ask me way but they are.

To send a file to a WM device is a pain in the a$$, also getting connected to any Wifi router or AP. WM are very good since they can sync better with Outlook and gives the same look and feel as if you were in a PC.

But here is the dilemma: a phone with PDA cappabilities or a PDA with a phone?

I do prefer a better phone rather than a pda. Also screen and cameras are worse in WM devices. Mention one device made by HTC that carry a good camera...

For a daily basis work horse, P990 or in this case P1 is the way to go!!

The Touch is asexy device, but the UI doesn't seem to be all that it claims to be. Touch flow is just a layer on top of WM to acces he different apps and for first level navigation. From the few tests I've read, it's more annoying than anything else (even though it surely looks nice), and people end up deactivating it.
Plus you don't have any keyboard and text input seems to be a major issue, so if you inted to write SMS and emails a lot, you might get frustrated.

I don't have any links to give you but I would advise you to have a look at a video review (try Youtube). an aleternative would be the HTC kaiser, more expansive, but it has all that you could think of.

K... From the replys dis far, wat i'v understood is 'People make comments bout WM based on their long past experiences'

Things hav changed a lot during the recent months, esp aftr d launch of WM6. And the HTC phones hav improved a lot quality wise. Its not that it was bad

Now b4 dwellin in2 my opinions lemme tell u - i'v used Touch for 3 days n right now i hav an SE P990i

SE P1i (& UIQ3 in general)-

>Pros:
Functional user interface
Surplus program memory (for P1i)
Better camera
Physical keypad
3G

>Cons:
Extreme lack of 3rd party apps, esp freewares, when compared to WM & S60
U can't tweak or customize the UIQ OS as u can with a WM PPC.
The PDA functionality is limited if u compare it with a WM PPC (esp if u use 3rd party PIM apps in ur PPC)
The enjoyability factor is less if u r a geek/half geek

*couldn't comment bout d HW n the OS in detail, as i haven't used P1i. But i hope it'd b way better than P990i

HTC Touch (HTC Elf)-

>Pros:
Excellent PDA phone
Nice call clarity and a loud loud speaker
The Touch Flo interface will definitely grow on u in time
The phone has good multimedia functionality
The WM6 Professional is way better than Symbian UIQ3 in availability of apps n games
Once the phone is unlocked u can flash it with any compatible customized ROM for higher functionality & better performance
A professional and extremely helpful community at xda-developers & modaco
The HTC customizations on the WM6 OS improves overall functionality
The connection manager has improved a lot
Excellent form factor. You'll enjoy using this thin n elegant PPC

>Cons:
Inferior camera (when compared to P1i)
No 3G radio
There was a low program memory issue in d early editions, but could b easily solved using tweaks & customized ROMs

I'd say, FEEL THE TOUCH!

P1i better camera? You either must be joking, talk crap, don't have a clue what P1i's pictures look like or All Of The Above . With the things as they are now the P1i has excessive noise in the pictures. Lets hope and wait for a firmware upgrade. Even the P990i takes better pics ! Your other points seem to be valid thou.
