I often get a warning: not enough memory while using my P990, for example while browsing html pages. Why not let the phone use the memory card as RAM? It might not be the fastest solution, but better than nothing. Some pages cannot be browsed even after restarting the phone. For instance www.cyberphoto.se (where I actually bought my phone) cannot be viewed properly, even after restarting the phone. |

so you mean like the same way a hard drive is used on PC for virtual memory
hmmm.. my first thought is what if something critical is placed there and the user removes the memory stick?
mind you on pc I'm fairly sure you can use removeable media for virtual memory but I wonder if symbion OS is up to dealing with that?

Yes you can use a USB stick as expandable RAM in Vista!
would be good if the P990 was able to do the same!

its technically possible to boot a PC from USB memory stick but I just don't think Symbian is capable enough

Removing the card should result in a restart, but thats a cheap price to pay for "endless" RAM.
If this is not possible, I think that SE should give us an option to upgrade the hardware for 50$ and get the P1 memory. The phone is almost useless now. It warnes for low memory all the time, when starting the radio, sending MMS, starting the Vijay golf game. And I have restarted the phone yesterday!
One can buy 4Gig memory card today for "nothing", how the f**k can we accept a flagship model whith such severe memory problems and paying such insane amount of money for it? Wake up SE! I am NOT going to buy the P1 and put maybe 400$ between just to get more memory and still the same useless wifi b.
The wifi on the P990 sucks compared to HTC phones. My friends phone (more than a year old windows mobile HTC, cheaper then the P990) can find at least 30 networks where i can find below ten.

won't the advantage of using the Memory stick as an extra RAM be limited by the bottleneck of access speed ? I mean, on a regular PC, the RAM is plugged directly into the motherboard, granting a lightning-fast access in and out of RAM, but when using an external memory (either a USB thumbdrive on a PC or a Mem Stick on a P990), the extra speed you get from extra RAM is lost on the longer transfer time between to and from the external memory...
has anyone tested this on a PC with Windows Vista and see if it yields any significant RAM boost ? |

Yes, but the downloading from the internet is so slow anyway that one would not notice the slow transfer between the card and the phone. Like I said before, any aditional memory is better than no memory. |

perhaps if u installed all your prograns on the memory card used some of the onboard memory as ram that could work.....but you know thats nothing but a pipe dream i dont see it happening !!

Hi all,
Don't you think if this was possible by now it would of been done obviously it is not possible using the Symbian OS as it would of been such a simple solution and the manufactures would of jumped on it to improve this deficiency in their devices.

hi,
its a too old thread and seems had been extinguished the subject but I w'd appreciate to inflamate it again = does somebody though is possible to built a mod for firmware or an app to allow uiq3 specially p990 to use flash card as a virtual RAM?? |
